New BIOS on m9750

Just FYI - Alienware has 2 new BIOS updates available on "My Hive". One is for XP only, the other is for Vista only.

Both updates list that they allow the BIOS to see all system RAM - a problem with the previous BIOS.

After a lengthy call with tech support last night, it was recommended that I update to the XP only BIOS for my dual boot system running both XP and Vista.

Turns out the XP only BIOS works fine w/ Vista as well, however even though the BIOS "sees" the total memory now, my Vista x64 install will still not see more than 2.5GB of system memory. Looks like we're still bouncing off of the limitation of the 945PM chipset for memory addressing.

Please note that according to the documentation with the BIOS files, you will void your warranty if you perform a BIOS update without the authorization of AW tech support.

I DONT BOLIVET!!!... And this is supposed to be a high performance, top notch laptop that "blurs the line between high-end workstations and laptops"... peh!

I was about to order a pair of 2gb gskill ramchips...

Has anyone experience with Linux and a 4gb equiped m9750??
Do you have vista or xp bios??

If I get linuts and the 4gb, which is the bios to use?

I currently have vista home premium 32bits

What tech support told me was that the only differences between the 2 BIOS's are some power management settings that vista can take advantage of. As such, it was recommended to me that I go with the XP BIOS for my dual boot system running XP and Vista. Presumably the recommendation would stand for other OS's as well (i.e. linux), but I would sincerely suggest that you call AW before performing the upgrade and ask for yourself. Also, you need to let them know you want to do the BIOS upgrade or you'll void your warranty.

Does the bio's update still say 'aurora 7900' at the top of the screen when you up-dated?

The m9750 is almost 2 Years old technology... things change over time....if you want more up-to-date technology then the m17x or the m15x or the m17 will be more close to current technology...

I would really like a chance to use the XP bios. I'm a second hand user as well, and the elitist bullshit of "My Hive" won't let me have at it. TIA

There is a limitation in the chipset so it does not support 4GB. Depending on how many video cards you have you get anywhere from 2.56 to 3GB
