Pretty certain the 8700m GT is better.. I am not 100% sure so don't go by my word. But I have heard that it's better.

Well, the benchmarks showed that a 8600 is about on par with a 7900GS in DX9.
However, the 7900GS is easily overclockable, while the 8600 isn't. I would assume an o/c 7900GS is close to a 8700 ?

@savat: Where did u get the information, that the 8XXXM isn't overclockable!? There are allways ways to overclock every card...

No, I didn't mean it is not o/c, it is just not as scalable as a 7900GS. People who o/c it got a little more from it, but far from the impressive 600/800 target of the 7900GS.

What he likely meant is that the 8600M GT is pushing its hardware limits, which isn't ENTIRELY true. It CAN be overclocked, just not as much or to the increase in performance that the 7900 GS can.

In reality, however, the 8700M GT is the least overclockable of the two, as it's just an overclocked 8600M GT itself. I've not seen very good overclocking results with either card, but even moreso for the 8700M.

depends on the resolution you run it at; my friend has an 8600gts desktop card and his monitor maxes at 1280x1024; he can play basically any game at max settings (save crysis of course) at his maximum resolution. Of course I have heard that the 8600 series doesn't scale as well at higher resolutions so if you run higher than say 1440x900, you would appreciate the 7900 over the 8600

I ic, I was just curious because my friend got dual 8600 gt desktop cards and he was trying to claim to me how awesome they are and I just thought he was full of shit because I have a 7950 gtx , i just needed some confirmation

I don't think a 8600GT desktop SLI runs better than your 7950GTX. Just my humble opinion based on general experience. x600 series are worth what they are worth.

I still say it depends on the resolution
Don't forget we are also comparing dual desktop cards to a single laptop card; laptop cards are slower by design (lower power consumption) and I think dual 8600s would probably be faster in resolutions less than 1600x1200

IMHO I think you will find anything less than a 8800 SLi solution with decent drivers will be slower in real world performance than a 7950GTX. THe 8xxx series notebook cards are neutered.

but we're talking about desktop cards vs laptop cards; I will admit that the 8000 series laptop cards thus far have been a huge disappointment, but the 8600 desktop cards aren't half bad.
