Aurora 7700: Just upgraded from a 3200+ to FX60 CPU, but computer won't boot!

i just installed a new AMD FX60 dual core and swapped out my old AMD 3200+ but now my computer won't boot. i put a nice layer of AS5 on there as per the guide in the sticky, closed it up, the computer will power on for 10-15 seconds with a blank screen, then shut down on its own.

i tried disconnecting the battery, ac adapter, and mobo battery then holding the power button to release power and reset the bios, but that didn't work either.

can anyone tell me what to do here?

thank you

have tried removing the cmos battery?

contact a member by the name of Hulioni, he has one of those machines and I'm sure he will be able to point you in the right direction

Do you know what bios you are on? If I remember right there was a bios that supported the FX-60 939 processor in the 7700 towards the end.

yes i removed the cmos battery (under the keyboard). the bios i am on is the original bios that came with the system. i did update my chipset to the one available in the support.alienware.com download area for the amd 7700, and there is an update there for the bios as well, these 2:

Keyboard Controller BIOS 1.00.03

Features and fixes in this BIOS release:
  • Adds the FN+F1 key combination functionality to enable and disable the Alienware Logo and Alien-head LED set.
  • Adds the FN+F2 functionality to change the speed of the CPU fans
  • Adds Touchpad enable and disble tones for the Fn+F10 key combination (2 tones = disabled/1 tone = enabled).
  • Sets the following Alien-head LED behavior: A. AC Mode: LED always ON B. Battery Mode: LED always ON C. Suspend Mode: LED always OFF D. Power OFF: LED always OFF.

and

System BIOS 1.00.07

Features and fixes in this BIOS release:
  • Corrected the Nvidia G71 Bios String not being display correctly
will any of those help me?

i also had the latest AMD cpu driver (1.3.2.0) installed before swapping in the new processor

Are you still under warranty? If so you should call them to flash to the .07 system bios. I think that was the last one that was put out. It's just a guess but that is what I'm thinking the problem could be. I still think that one of the last ones had to do with the FX-60 but I could be wrong.

hi hul,

yes i am, however i am installing the fx60 out of warranty. AW doesn't sell parts for the 7700 anymore since it's discontinued so i had to get one from a 3rd party vendor. i am confident i can flash the bios myself, i think. so long as i had some decent instruction.

if you are still under warranty...you should call AW first and then have them walk you through the process so you don't void your warranty...

Once you burn the iso to a cd and select to boot from cd it will walk you through the steps. There really isn't much that you do, just watch it erase, reprogram, verify. It is possible to mess up, say a power surge or something but it's very unlikely. Of course it would be on your own if something did go wrong. I'm not on the last bios as I have the 4800+ before the fx came out. Like I said I'm not positive but damn close to that is the problem. Maybe someone else will post before you give it a shot. You could also put the old chip back in, call them and have them walk you through the bios flash. Then try the FX-60 again after that is done.

believe me i tried. with 2 different technicians in fact. they don't want anything to do with it unless it is a part i received from them.

im going to put in the old chip right now and try flashing the bios since the system won't even boot with the new one in. wish me luck.

oh wait so hmmm.. flashing to the new bios on the old chip will effect compatibility for the fx60? i thought i had to flash on the fx60...

It is backwards compatible with all previous chips and includes the newer at the time FX-60. So if you use the old chip to flash the bios, then put the FX in it should then detect it properly if it is indeed the bios. I would flash with the old one and call and have AW walk you through it to keep the warranty valid as Yang mentioned. Then pop the the new chip in after.

one more question huli, i was wondering if you knew anything about memory. before i got the new processor i put in matching pc3200 ddr400 1gb x 2 sticks in the system. now i don't think the full potential of the memory was used due to the previous processor being too weak (not sure if that is right or not). when i look at cpu-z it says my memory is at 200 mhz frequency, but my CPU is blasting away at 2600 mhz, sometimes 1200 mhz (since it is "cool n' quiet").

now that i have upgraded to the fx60, is the RAM going to be running at full speed, should be 400mhz, right?
turn off cool n quiet, glad you got your lappy up and running...very sweet!

how do i disable cool n quiet without using some 3rd party software (like notebook hardware controller)?
hmm, it's been several yrs since I've had an amd, and I never had one in a laptop...but I thought you were able to disable it in the bios?

unless you aren't able to do that on a laptop platform...

um hul...where you @? =P
