Looking for a $400-500 laptop (ebay, used or refurb is ok)

I'm trying to replace a laptop that I've been borrowing and has been having some problems. It's a Gateway with a P-4 1.70 GHz, 512 MB RAM, and a 40GB HD. Frankly, this did everything I needed it to, although a small upgrade might be nice.

I basically just need something to get online and do basic stuff when I'm away from my office at home. I might be taking it in my truck alot too, for what that's worth. No gaming or anything like that.

So, something reliable and durable would be at the top of my list.

This is the first laptop I've ever used and now I realize I need one.

Any suggestions as to brands or models to look for (or stay away from)? Any certain processors to look for (or stay away from)? It doesn't need to be new, something on ebay, or a refurbished model is fine. It'll probably just get dinged up anyway.

that much can get you a brand new laptop- though pretty bottom of the line, which you don't seem to object. just check sites like fatwallet.com, techbargains.com or watch for dell coupons.

Well, a quick check on Dell's Outlet can net you a "Scratch & Dent" Inspiron E1505 for $489.

It has:

Windows Vista Home Premium
1 GB RAM
120 GB Hard Drive
Larger 9 Cell Primary Battery
Intel Core Duo Processor T2250 (1.73GHz/533MHz/2 X 1MB L2 Cache)
8X Dual-Layer DVD Burner
15.4" WXGA Screen Display
1390 Wireless Card (b/g)

Pretty decent deal and a major upgrade from your old laptop.

That sounds nice.

After doing some reading this afternoon and looking at reviews, I'm considering spending a little more and getting a used Thinkpad.

I'm just saying, he should have no problem snagging a used ThinkPad with a dual-core and such for the same amount of money. If he's patient, there are better deals to be had is all I am saying.
