T40 loose battery

My faithful Thinkpad T40 now suddenly stops due to a loose battery.

Any suggestions? Will a new battery solve it?

in what way is it loose? have u locked it in? is the battery housing defect?

The locks work but seem to be loose. there is still play in the battery even when locked.
