Anyone here use Linux on Sony Vaio AR590E?

So far I've tried Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10, and I have a few problems

1. Some of the special keys don't work.
- Eject
- S1
- S2
- Play/Pause, Stop, Previous, Next
- Brightness Keys
2. I don't get sound through the headphone jack, though the speakers work without a problem
3. Blu-ray discs are not getting mounted (Video and data, both)

I haven't tried using memorysticks but I guess I'll have a problem with that too but not too bothered about that right now. I guess even the S-Video and HDMI might not work but I haven't tested those either to be sure.
==============================================
Things that worked right out of the box

- Touchpad
- Volume Up/Down
- Mute button
- Wireless Card
- Bluetooth
- GeForce card drivers was available as a restricted driver, which I enabled, and it worked great
==============================================

It didn't detect my RAID0 configuration so I disabled that before installing Ubuntu. I might have not tried hard enough to set it up, i.e, using dmraid or something, but at that time, I was more eager to setup Linux on the laptop.

Anyone here who can help me fix what I couldn't get to work? Being able to reduce the brightness is the most important one amongst these.

sony has a history of using proprietary junk to make things not work right. but at least your are trying so kudos.

touchpad : i know you said it "works" but do the scroll areas work? you might need to install synaptics and configure in xorg.conf to enable that

dedicated hardware buttons: go to Administration > Keyboard Shortcuts (or something of this nature.. haven't used gnome in a while so don't remember exactly) and set them up one by one. for example, find where it says "Eject" click it...then press the hardware eject button, and so forth. First things first...type "eject -r" in terminal to make sure the command itself is properly configured. If not go to synaptic and find "eject"

headphone jack: that is indeed strange. gotta wait for seablade to answer that one since he is the linux audio guru here.

bluray: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...BluRayAndHDDVD read and see if it will help.

Yes the scroll area also worked without any configuration, but I did use gsynaptics to enable tap and drag.

As for the multimedia keys, I tried the keyboard shortcuts too. But whats funny is that there is response when I press those buttons, It gives the output XF86AudioPause, XF86AudioStop, etc but they don't do anything in the Audio and Video players, which is strange. Probably won't do without a driver.

I checked out the Ubuntu forum and some people were able to get everything working on older Vaio models using either sonypi or the sony-laptop drivers. But this laptop being a very new model, I guess its a matter of time until someone writes a driver for it.

The Blu-ray discs are not getting mounted. I'll need to get it to mount before I can try to rip videos. Maybe its a driver problem for that as well.

Seablade has left his sanity for the time being... if you would like to leave a message, please do so at the beep....

BEEP

Seablade

Opened a show tonight that has taken ALL of his time, I will reply when I get time to look at the laptop and audio module for it. Might be a couple of days though.

Do me a favor, post up your lspci -v and lsmod outputs? First glance puts that as a strange audio chip I might not be familiar with(Dang sony).

Ok gotta take a look at this a little later, so don't let me forget. However for the record the CODE tags work amazingly well at improving readibility for copy and pastes like this and keep them from taking up to much room.

Using synaptic, check your version you have installed of ALSA and post up the version for me? There apparently were some problems with that chip in older versions and 7.10 ships with one of those versions, but apparently it is fixed in the newer version.

Just in case I need it later, mind posting the output of...

grep Codec /proc/asound/card0/codec#*

Alsa version is 1.0.14
Code:
/proc/asound/card0/codec#0:Codec: SigmaTel CXD9872AKD
/proc/asound/card0/codec#1:Codec: Conexant ID 2c06
/proc/asound/card0/codec#2:Codec: Realtek ALC262

Go ahead and update your Alsa version through synaptic and see if that makes a difference. If that doesn't work a solution for a related problem that may apply here involves backporting your kernel version slightly, but lets see if updating your ALSA drivers will do it.

Hi again,

Sorry I had been out of town. I tried updating alsa (there was no update in the repositories so I compiled it from source using the guide given here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto ) and now my sound does not work at all from the past 3 months

This is my dmesg output

Hmm something is not matching between ALSA libs there.

When you compiled from source, did you remove the old version completely?

No I didn't. That page said it will not interfere with Ubuntu packages, so I thought it was unecessary. I tried removing them and compiling it again, but still have the same problem.

Any idea which distro has updated version of ALSA? I'm downloading Fedora right now, though no idea if I'll have the same problem or worse.

Try out some LiveCDs first if you want to try other distros. One I tend to recommend a bit recently is eLive (www.elivecd.org) so give that one a try and see if sound works on it. I can't remember what version of ALSA it has with it though, thus why LiveCDs are a good thing

I got it to work with Fedora today.

The internal mic doesnt work. I dont know about the mic port though cause I dont have a mic to check that.

The red light from the optical out port doesnt work so I dont know if that ports works either. I will have to test that when I get a set of speakers.

Thanks for all the help from this forum. I still have a long way to go to reach 100% compatibility, but sadly as I buy a new Vaio almost ever year, I will be back to square one with the next model.

Next thing I need to work on Linux is the brightness control. Not having much luck with that either. Thats the only other major thing I need to get fixed.

As with bluetooth, memory stick ports, etc, I think that would work in VMware, so not a big deal.
