Vista wont reinstall on my M1730

Thread Starter
I need some help. I just got a 1730 and if i use the operating system disk that came with it it locks up on the part of the install that says "completing installation" and If I try using a copy of vista ultimate that I have it will install and the first time i reboot the computer I get a quick flash of a BSOD then it restarts and keeps doing it. any ideas? thanks

The Vista Ultimate you have probably doesnt' have SATA drivers on it for the SATA controller on the laptop is my only guess. Call Dell and ask them for a replacement for your Vista disc. If the system still won't work, then I'd start looking for a hardware issue.

Hi, I am experiencing the exact same problem as NickMagnus, what kind of hardware issue should I be looking at? I flashed the bios to A10, and it appeared to be successful. I tried to do a system recovery from the recovery partition, and it repeatedly failed at the halfway point. I removed the hard drive to format it with a different pc, and it showed 3 partitions?! 1 tiny one was an EISA part,71mb. Then the system part, then the recovery part. when I tried to format the partitions in windows, the only options I was given were exFAT or NTFS?! I finally used vista command prompt to successfully delete all the parts, and was able to format the disc in NTFS. Again, as soon as it hits"finishing installation" after it reboots, it goes no further. Do I have a bad HD? Is it supposed to be exFAT? Should I go so far as to take out the mobo batt and reset the cmos? Any advice would be so greatly appreciated, I'm out of warranty and I can't stand the thought of sending it to Dell for a sure to be pricey service call. Thanks for any help!!

Whoa way to bring back a dead thread. This one is pretty common on newer machines what you need to do is go to the BIOS and set the controller type to ATA instead of AHCI however you will lose the ability to use an expansion card used by the 1730 thats an optional upgrade to allow you to enchance memory performance.

Thanks!

I did as you suggested and all is well, but I was wondering if this has an effect on the performance of the HD? I mean, will it run slower, or is it strictly the ability to use flash mem supplements that is affected? Again, thanks for the help, you would think Dell would have drivers loaded with the OS for this, didn't they anticipate anybody replacing their hd??

XP neither takes advantage of AHCI support, nor performs poorly from the lack of it.

cheers ...

What about Vista? And thanks for the preposterously fast reply:>

Vista will take full advantage of AHCI and SATA performance. It performs better on SATA drives than IDE ones. This is based on my personal usage of Vista on different comps.

I guess what I am asking is, will my hd speed be affected by running in ATA mode with Vista? I mean, I would like to use the feature, but so far, noone seems to be able to tell me how to install the SATA driver during Vista install. Is my HD running at it's best speed in ATA mode? If so, I won't worry about the flash cache. And thanks again!

Your hard drive will do fine with Vista in ATA mode.

But will it be getting it's best performance? I only ask because it's obviously a gaming laptop, and I want it to be right. And cheers to you, as well

Tough one to clarify.

Let me try to make an analogy, your racing car (system/hard drive) can perform with either super (sata) or regular (ata). I am sure that in some instances where the super will push the car a bit faster than the regular. Other than that, it will get you where you want to go.

cheers ...

No effect on on performance since all the neat enchancements you will need/gain will come from the drive itself such as NQC or 7200 RPM. You do lose the ability to use Intel Turbo Flash modules and Hotswapping drives which allow you to pop a hard or optical drive in and out while still in windows like a usb drive. Rest assured you lose nothing performance wise.

I think your problem could be your bios version.

I remember several months ago I updated my bios and then I could not install Vista anymore. I had to reflash my bios but this time I used an older revision and then everything was ok again.

You said you installed A10, you may want to try with A9 or maybe A8.

Cheers!
