G1S Ctrl+Space intermittent

Hi all,

I recently bought a G1S and so far I'm loving it. Not loving Vista so much but it's mostly working. Though I haven't had this many BSODs since Win95.

Anyway, I rely rather heavily on Ctrl-space in a puTTY terminal to select text in emacs (I'm a *nix programmer). Sadly that key combo does not always work. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't; going into hibernation sometimes (but not always) seems to cause the key combo not to work after awakening. Rebooting (full cold boot) does not help.

The sometimes, the next day it starts working again for no apparent reason.

The Ctrl-space combo also does not work in Explorer when this happens.

Does anyone know of anything Asus might have installed on here which might be intercepting this? I have tried killing everything I could find that seemed likely; Norton got the boot on day 1; all ATK* processes are killed, etc. Nothing helps.

The weird thing is that it only happens sometimes.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

ATK processes should be enabled- they make the hotkeys and function buttons work. I did some googling and found at least one spot that said Ctrl+Space is inherently tied to keyboard language switching in Vista and assigning that particular key combination to other processes can be problematic since Vista wants to keep reassigning it back to its default role. They suggest choosing a different key combo.

OK, thanks for the response! Using that I found more information on the web. I knew that about the ATK* stuff and would be more than happy to live without the hotkeys and function buttons if Ctrl-space worked reliably. They are nice-to-haves, not must-haves, for me. But if I don't have to do that, so much the better. Looks like I don't.

Changing the ctrl-space key combo in emacs is not really an option for me, as I usually don't work locally--I ssh into various machines around the world to work. Plus, changing the typing habits of the past 15 years to deal with MS introducing this new bug (I have long since disabled the language switching hotkeys and removed all language packs, but the thing keeps grabbing the key combo--ergo, bug) is not something I'm prepared to do.

If I cannot fix this, it'll be the showstopper that gets the Vista partition erased.

I'll try remapping the key sequences, but the dialog box for that limits you to 4 (!) options: 'Not assigned', 'Ctrl-shift', 'Left alt-shift', and 'Grave accent'. 'Not assigned' obviously does not work reliably; there is no grave accent on this keyboard, and ctrl-shift and alt-shift are both required for emacs. Bummer.

Next step: try to disable or remove the language bar entirely. It is of no use to me and it's a mystery why it's enabled by default with such a ridiculous keybinding and restricted available keybinding options.

Anyway, thanks again for the tip! I know this is no longer an Asus thread but I am glad to learn that it is not the default Asus software which is responsible, at least. Sorry for venting on yet one more Vista screwup.

Be sure to have all the XP drivers before formatting the Vista install. It seems many people just install XP over Vista and find out that they do not have specific drivers for XP afterwards.

Hi, I had a similar behaviour.
  1. Ctrl-Shift-Space on my machine results in Ctrl-Space, so I can still use emacs almost as before ,
  2. My New windows box behaves similarly. Google-pack, or one of its components may be the culprit, or another application. Removing open office did not help. The spyware tool? No idea yet.

Actually the problem turned out to be the Language Bar, which you cannot easily disable in Vista. In fact, Microsoft's own instructions for disabling/removing it do not always work, and don't work at all for me.

I've long since given up Vista as a piece of crap and now I just use Linux. Faster, prettier, more stable, and more secure. If I need any Windows capabilities again that I can't get with Wine or a VM, then I'll be going to XP. Vista is useless.

Fellow emacs user here, I recently purchased an M50Sv-A1 and ran into the same problem.

I found a "fix" (besides linux; I already dual-boot because I need to use Visual Studio for work), it seems that running an alternative desktop shell, such as GeoShell, will alleviate this issue.

This "solution" also shows that the bug is in explorer.exe, or in its interaction with the language system (such as where explorer stores its keyboard hooks), rather than further back in the os dlls (many keyboard shortcuts still work without explorer.exe running, such as win+r). This is all just conjecture, mind you, because I'm not allowed to see the code =P
