I am in the market for a new gaming laptop. It as come down to 2 choices.

Either the Alienware m9750 or the Dell 1710.

I spec'd out the machines the exact same. Except the AW has dual vid cards and the Dell has 1, their the same card though. And the Dell was still mroe expensive.

Ive heard lots of bad things about AW support. Ive read some bad thigns about the laptops. I would really like to hear from people who have owned their AW 9750 for like 6+ months if not longer if possible.

I would really like to make a decision here, but feel I need mroe info. Any help and/or experiences with your laptop would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

my advice, if you want SLI stick with a desktop solution, ifyou want a laptop stick with a single GPU solution

The m9750 hasn't been out 6+ months.

My m9700 is over a year old now, 12+ hours a day, best laptop I've ever owned, period.

SLI works great for me, though you won't see twice the performance, more like 50%-75% for games that are coded for SLI. Counter Strike Source is the only game I play that doesn't see a significant boost in performance with SLI.

As for support, I just had my first issue with my m9700. The dvd-rw drive stopped reading dvd's but it read cd's fine. I contacted them, and they sent me an exchange via FedEx, I swapped out the drive and shipped the bad one back with the shipping label AW sent. All this was under warranty, and AW paid all costs including shipping.

You're going to find complaints with all computer companies, Dell included. I personally have had few issues with my six systems (four desktops, two laptops) from AW, and they've all been addressed to my satisfaction quickly.

Good luck with your decision.

sorry, I was unaware that the 975 hasnt been out that long.

The laptop will msotly be used to play Everquest 1. Maybe PLaneside if it can handle it.

I will check out those articles.

I wont even get into the wonderful thing that happened to me, but I'll tell you one thing.. Alienware made me a customer for life, my 9700 has has 0 problems in the past year, and it has not been turned off in close to 5 months.

If that's all you're playing, either laptop you mention will deal with those without even blinking. Neither game has high system requirements.. in fact I'd be tempted to suggest it's overkill to buy a M9750 if those two games are all you are going to play.

Sorry but I'm not a huge AW tech fan.

But then again almost all OEM computer support is crap to me.

Either one will make you probably happy but if you want a SLi solution you're SOL and stuck with the M9750 out of the two that you're looking at. Not only that Dell's XPS service I keep on hearing is top notch but I'm sure both will try to help you to the fullest to keep you satisfied with your machine.

must not play PS very much. It jacks my g/f's Falcon NW Mach V desktop to 100% cpu usage. Granted, i can play it with multiple applications int eh background open and never notice it, but still. And its no slouch either.

it doesnt matter which company you deal with Customer Service can be great and sometimes it can be bad... it just depends on who you have to deal with... i have had my m9750 since July and its been an awesome computer no problems... i have one 7950 GTX card and it does every game that i want to play including bioshock...From my experience with CS you just have to be nice and patient they will bend over backwards to help you if your nice.... if your a butthole then its harder to help someone.... if a problem does arise just be calm and collective and tell them what the problem is before jumping in their face saying why is this thing broken can you not build anything better....

I have had my m9750 since June 28. No problems. Runs very cool and isn't too loud. I have dual graphics cards so I am really impressed with the cooling on this thing.

I can't stress how well-built the whole chassis is. 1.5 inches, rock-solid, and it handles heat effectively. It shipped in perfect condition as well.

Right now, the only flaw for mine is that some of the paint chipped off on the corner. I'm not sure how this happened as I've been extremely careful in handling it when taking it around, but I'm sure it could have happened to any laptop.

I'd wait to see what Alienware announces on Nov 19.
