Vista to XP , Dell Inspiron 1521 :: I tried everything!!

Yesterday I received my new dell laptop, inspiron 1521. This laptop had vista preinstalled on it,
as I don't like vista I decided upfront that I would directly install XP when the notebook arrived. To be honest I underestimated this process. I thought this was going to be easy, I have installed XP numerous times on other laptops/pc's.
As I was so confident I just deleted everything on the notebook: the partition with vista and the recovery partition (I know probably stupid but it took in 30 gig and I thought I was not going to need it as I don't want to recover to vista).
I installed XP Professional SP2 on the new partition (containing the full hard drive), but after xp is done copying the files, things go wrong. I get the intro screen of "XP Professional", so far normal....but then I just get a blue sreen with an error. I have tried to reinstall xp a few times but I keep getting errors.

This the mail I have just send to Dell Support (translated from Dutch )

Give the errors you are receiving
STOP : c0000221 {incorrect controlsum copy}
Copy wldap32.dll is possibly damaged. The controlsum of the header doesn't ressemble the calculated controlsum. (translated from dutch)

Description of the problem
I wanted to convert from vista to xp (sp2). I thought this was going to be easy, this is why I maybe went to action too fast. I deleted my vista partition, my recovery partition and my media partition. The installation fails just after the copying of files, windows reboots, shows the windows logo and then gives a bluescreen with error I stated above.

To make the disaster complete, installing vista back with the delivered cd doesn't work anymore either, I'm getting 'can't find file X' message.

Description of the steps executed to solve the problem

I have taken several steps to solve this. I got into contact with the dell online chat support. The first thing they asked me was to check the bios and find 'sata operation' in the onboard devices menu. But it just isn't there, there's only integrated NIC, external USB ports, media card and 1394, module bay device in this menu - so far for the first solution - the Dell helper confirmed : it isn't in your bios.

Dell Helper : "I went to check with my collegues and it seems that your windows version misses some drivers"

The dell helper gave me this link : http://wwwd.amd.com/AMD/SReleaseF.ns...t?OpenDocument , and there I had to download 'AMD M690T/M690E/SB600 Chipset Windows® XP 32/64-Bit Drivers v8.4'.

There it was the solution...I had to slipstream those files into my current xp cd, this was a fairly simple process, I just downloaded the freeware program nLite, loaded my installation into it, was able to bring in the downloaded drivers (I only installed the 32 bit ones). I just had to burn this to a cd, which is also possible with nLite. I honestly thought this was going to work, I now had a CD with all the xp drivers for my hardware on it....no such luck, I went again through the process of installing XP, but exactly at the same point things went wrong again and I ended up with the same error...

These errors got me thinking that maybe there's something wrong with the hard drive dell delivered. I decided to do some test with the diagnostic test cd that came with the laptop and I got some errors:

SATA Confidence Test
>
- 0F00:1344 Uncorrectable Data Error -> write protected
- Error Code : 0F00:075D

(SATA S/N = 5MA6C8SD)

What could I try next to make the installation happen? Could it be that this hard drive is corrupted? If yes, what is the procedure now, seeing that I have just gotten this laptop last week?

-------------------------------------------------------
Is there anyone that knows what I should do now???

Did you reformat the hard drive? Just asking because I did not read anywhere that you have done this or not. Just ruling out the obvious.

Yep done that, I really have no idea of what I could do next, I guess I'll just call Dell and ask them what to do next

so. i gave google a go. didnt find much. i did find antother post thats like in the same length but in a different language. im assuming thats you posting on another forum. lol. but i did find a yahoo answers chat saying that your hdd is defective. i had to integrate sata drivers into my xp to get it to work on my laptop. if you havent done this (you probably did if it recognized the hard drive when you went to install the os) I would email dell and give them so crap till they say something to help you. Your problem isnt heard of very much. so if you can figure this out. itl be one for the record books

JM007, go into the BIOS on the system and disable AHCI (a.k.a. change it from AHCI to ATA) Now try to reinstall and all should be well.

Hi

There's no such thing ("AHCI") in my bios

Hmm... perhaps its only an option on the Intel based systems. I didn't realize you had the AMD system at first. Aside from that, I suppose a bad drive could be the culprit... let us know what happens when you get the drive replaced!
