problem with wireless...satellite1905-s301

Thread Starter
I recently installed Athos/Askey AR5BMB5 (shows up as 802.11g wireless cardbus adapter, in device manager) in my satellite 1905-s301. Card was taken out of a Toshiba Satellite M45-s169, and was functioning properly in that laptop. I can't seem to establish a connection to the wireless network. I've tried NUMEROUS different things and read/searched for hours! I did find (on this site) where someone said to cover pins 11 & 13 and that would solve problem. MY problem is, I took the card back out to try this and I have no idea how to figure out which are pins 11 & 13! I can't see ANY numbers on the card,to be able to tell which side is odd/even,or which end to start from, so, I'm completely lost. Could someone please help me? Is this even what I should be trying to do? I'm new to laptops and have no idea what I'm doing with this wireless stuff. I simply plug in here at home & it works fine, but I need wireless for work. I would GREATLY appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

try to copy the driver of the card from the working laptop over?

cheers ...

Be sure that the driver is installed and that the wireless zero configuration service is enabled. Search Microsoft's support site for instructions on enabling the service if it isn't currently enabled.

have u verified that the wireless connection properties are the same on both comps? If u have issue at work place, night want to ask the administrator to see if anything must be done to wep/wap

Covering pins 11 & 13 shouldn't do anything for you at all. If the card is a mini PCI card, then that would do nothing for you.

I'm assuming that you have Windows XP installed on both systems...are they both SP2? If not, you should try installing SP2. Also, make sure the antenna wires are properly secured to the wireless card and that the polarity is correct. Is the wireless antenna enabled on the 1905 (press and hold the Fn key and the wireless key--usually F7 or F8--to enable it)? You should see an orange wireless indicator light up on the indicator panel when it's active.

When you're saying the card doesn't work, what's happening or not happening? When you search for wireless networks, are you able to detect them but not connect to them? If you can see other networks, can you connect to unsecure ones and not to secure ones? At this point, I'll need a bit more info on what's going on to help you troubleshoot further.

If you put the card back in the M45, does it still work there?

I just solved same problem with my Askey AR5BMB5 and satellite 1900. Windows XP did recognize it, downloaded drivers automatically and installed it correctly. Nevertheless it did not see any networks. I tried several drivers and utilities, but nothing helped. So I had to tape contacts 11 and 13 on the card. (I tried to tape out 13 only, but it did not work). There is nice explanation here http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/MiniPCI and http://www.minipci.biz/pin7.jpg. It is for Linux, but does not meter in this case. Good luck. (tip: I used a thin tape).
