Should I get T61?

Hi all,

I am a new member and this is my first post! I have been doing a lot of research in the past few weeks about what's new out there and to decide which laptop I will get. (Latitude 630c? Thinkpad T61? ...)

At first I thought ""IBM"" prices would be out of reach but I realized that at equal specs the T61 was cheaper then Latitude 630c... Add to this the solid reputation of Thinkpads I thought this is perfect! So I was 2-3 clicks away from ordering the T61 when one of my friend told me that lenovo had the worst customer service and so on... So I started googling the topic and found countless horror stories, dated of 2005, 2006 and even 2007... (May 2007 seem to have been a disaster for lenovo...)

Can people of this forum let me know of what I am reading about lenovo is mostly true or if it is isolate cases?

Haven't had any issues with my T61

I'm in the same boat as you Harvey, I'm in the market for a similar notebook and am considering Dell or IBM. What i have heard is that Dell has excellent build quality with inexpensive parts. I beginning to think that IBM's are built well, but don't come with a very good warranty. The price of a 3 year warranty makes the Thinkpad a lot more expensive than a comparable Dell that comes with a 3 year warranty.

I ended up ordering a T61. But I am getting nervous now. I need this laptop before Dec 22nd (I ordered first week of November thinking I would be ok)

Before ordering I called Lenovo and asked the rep for the model I wanted, he said it would be shipped within 3 to 4 business days. Few days later I got an email saying it would take 3 to 4 weeks. Then I complained politely and asked them few questions, it took 6 days to get an answer... I asked them to reassure me I would get everything before Dec 22nd... they replied quickly but I can't understand the nonsense in the email I got. It doesn't make any sense... it's like he was answering someone else...

I've had one for 2 months now and I think it's a solid machine.
2.2 ghz, core 2 duo chip,2 gigs of ram (667 ghz) 200 mg HD etc...
The only con....windows VISTA, otherwise it's a solid lappy.

Vista, treats you like an idiot, that's never used a puter before.
It becomes annoying within 10 minutes of use!
Once you discard the bloatware, disable protect mode, get rid of Norton Anti Virus...
you've got quite a nice machine for under $1100!!!

Couple of questions .. I just ordered a T61, 15.4" ..... ship date is 10 Jan, 2008 ... (1) Is the upgraded LCD screen on par with the Dells, Sonys, HPs ?? (2) Is the build quality as good as most people make the quality out to be ??
Looking forward to the machine, but going to be quite a long wait it appears . . . . TIA

After personally dealing with the frustration caused by the harrowing experiences of shoddy, crap warranty service that took months to perform, only to result in repeat failure less than a month later, warranty coverage definitely ranks at the bottom of my concerns when shopping for a laptop.

I love the T61 (review here), but it has locked up at times. Not sure if it's a software issue. It might just be crappy Vista

I received my laptop, I had to return it since it was crashing all the time (and chkdsk always freezes at 85% on step 4...) Also the recovery DVD have Windows XP on them... (I ordered my computer with Vista Business...) whats going on... To top it off I forgot to mention it took 5 weeks to get that broken computer although the guy on the phone told me 1-2 weeks when I first called...

It took 2 weeks before they approve my return, so I finally sent the computer back and I have to wait few more weeks to get my $$$ back... in the meantime I ordered a replacement system (so basically for a period of a month or so I end up paying for 2 computers although I don't have one in my hands yet...)

I am currently calling their sales support (1-866-96THINK), I am on hold for the past 44 minutes... that's insane... oh, finally the guy picks up, I complain that I have been waiting so long but he doesn't seem to care at all, he answered me pretty rude actually, like most other lenovo rep that I spoke too

so I ask him about my computer, the site said it would take 1-2 weeks for delivery... its been already one week so I am expecting that my computer is somewhere ready to be shipped or so... well I am wrong, the guy just tells me something actually went wrong in my order and I will need to replace my order... WHAT!!! the guy asked me if I wanted to place a new order but I told him forget it just cancel everything....

this experience at lenovo has been by far the most frustrating experience when purchasing anything in my life, everything went wrong, it's ashame because I really like the computer (a friend of mine has a working one...)

If you get rid of the bloatware and protection mode, is Vista still as much of a resource hog?

First of all go for the T61... I have always loved thinkpads and when I got my T61 I was not disappointed, great build, great laptop!

On that note keep in mind never believe reps on ship dates, I was told mine would ship within 36 hours, it took 4 days... while that is even much better than dell shipping it was not 36 hrs... so be prepared for up to 10 days just for the laptop to ship.

Also DO NOT buy with Vista, it will have a high crash tendency and will be unstable... get Windows XP.

Compared with the Vostro laptop line the only thing I prefer on the Vostro is I love the true life screen... except when the sunis shining directly on it :P
You can't beat that screen though... the Vostros also have a much more durable build than the Inspirons IMO... but I wouldn't trade my T61 for a Vostro as it stands.
