Error Code 0321

Hello, I own a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505, Windows Media Edition notebook. Recently whenever I turn on the computer the screen is completely blank. However, if I connect the screen to an outside source like a projector I can see the display. I connected the Dell to a projector and ran the 32 bit diagnostics and got the following error:

LCD Connection Test
Error Code 0321
MSG Error Code: 2000-0321
Unable to detect LCD

Any suggestions on what I should do? Am I going to have to buy a new screen? How much do those generally cost? How difficult is instaling a new screen onto the laptop? Thanks for your assistance.

It could be the LCD panel, or it could be the connector cable between the panel and the panel and the graphics card. It's even possible that the cable has become detatched, and is actually fine.

Installing a new panel is just as easy as replacing the cable (you have to remove the panel either way), but there is a risk of causing damage, and since you don't know which part is faulty, you may be best off asking for assistance at a repair shop, so they can figure out which part is needed.

If it's under warranty, contect Dell for assistance, otherwise, if you're confident (and competent with this sort of thing), I would suggest carefully re-seating the LCD cable at both ends to see if it's just a loose connection, or if there's obvious damage to the cable.

The easiest end to check initially is the connector to the graphics card, which is under the hinge cover ( http://support.dell.com/support/edoc....htm#wp1123881 )

Checking the other end, will involve removing the display assembly (http://support.dell.com/support/edoc....htm#wp1022270 ) which is a more involved task.

Be careful not to touch the panel in the areas around the edges, or marked warning areas, and apply normal safety and anti-static procedures.

Make sure you're aware of any implications on your warranty if you mess around inside your laptop.

Hello,
This is Richard from the Dell Online Community Outreach group. The problem that you are experiencing is most likely the LCD cable not seated properly. Remove the AC power and the battery from the system. Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to properly discharge the unit. Remove the hinge cover, and reset the LCD cable attachment.

Attach the AC power and power on the system. Hopefully the LCD display comes up. Just remember to take your time and don't get nervous working on the computer. Please report back to the thread the results of your work.

I am having the same problem with my E1505. I have took cover off and reseated wire, still no video. Could there be any other problems?

No, the problem is most likely in the LCD itself. Now I suggest you make CERTAIN that the backlight is also working on the system. Shine a bright light on the screen and check t see if an image comes up but iis not visible due to no backlight. If that's the case you may just need an LCD Inverter which isn't too expensive.
