Hey guys, I have norton partition magic 8. apparantly it does not play nice with windows vista. i'm trying to repartition an external hard drive on my wifes compaq laptop. i found out that vista has a built in partition program, BUT it doesnt seem to want to open options for an external hard drive. do you guys know of something i'm maybe doing wrong? or a program that will let me partition the external hard drive in vista basic? thanks for all the help.

using a partition sizing program designed for a different OS is asking for trouble. See if there's a patch or upgrade that will make it compatible with vista (i suspect not), or find an alternative piece of software that supports vista.

Personally, I always use Gparted. Its available free as a bootable iso.

Yeah, GParted is good. I use Acronis Disk Director myself. Both work well.

ok thanks! I'll have to check on both those programs. One more question, on the bootable iso program, would i just burn to cd, place in disk and boot from there?

Yep, that's all you'd have to do. Just set the computer to boot from a CD, with the disk in the drive, and away you go!

i don't know about your vista, but my vista comes with partitioning tool built in, it's in all programs, administrative tools, computer management, disk management.

i have vista ultimate so i dunno if vista basic has this same feature but i think it does
