new 15" & 17" laptops w/ 8800m GTX! - Page 43

on other forums ive heard that the increase in performance from using SLI is not worth the extra money, and that it lowers performance in games that does not support it

So a single 8800 GTX would perform better than SLI 8800 GTX in certain games?
What games are they?
im not sure if its true but thats what i heard, what caught me though was the fact that apparantly the extra performance given by SLI (which ive read was about %20-%30 more) wasnt worth the extra price

There could be a number of reasons.

First being that the 8800 is running on the SR mobo, and the only way that happens is via Vista. From what I am reading Nvidia has issues with the SLI drivers and Vista. And what everyone has been posting Vista isnt the greatest gaming OS platform.

The other issue is that single 8800 card gives better marks than most SLI setups. With the 8800 in SLI you are getting more heat, using more power and getting only a marginally better score than just using 1, its just not worth it. What do you need to prove that you can spend more money than its worth?

I also know that only a certain number of PC games can use the SLI effectively because they were written specifically for SLI. Games like Bioshock or Crysis. But, if you really want all the power, then SLI isn't a bad thing at all.

well i think now im set on just a single 8800 card, what would you recommend for processor speed? id hate to get a lower end one then figure out the game i want to play requires me to have a faster one.

a 2.6ghz is probably what i would settle with... the extra 0.2 ghz for the extreme processor is not worth the extra bucks that you would have to pay... a 2.6 ghz and a single 8800 card 2 gigs of RAM is a good bang for your buck... if u need more ram its always cheaper to buy it and put it in urself...

you know the closer you get to buyin something the more questions pop up , ive never had a 15' notebook before, i currently have a 17' is there a big difference in text size on the 15'?
if u get the 1900x1200 size of a 15 inch the text will be small... but you can always change the resolution of the screen in ur control panel...on my m9750 i have the 1400x900 and i think it works great for me...

o thats good cause i was planning on the 1440 by 900 thanks
post #851 of 961
one thing is the less of a resolution u have on ur screen the less taxing it is on the video card...

This screen resolution should do you well. I have the 1680 x 1050 on my m5500 and it's almost too much for me, but then again I am 40 y/o, so my eyes are starting to go.

with the 1400 x900 resolution the webpages dont even go to the end of the screen they stop about three inches away from the edge so you can see everything u want and somemore..

If you have the patience, wait for the 17" to come out, it should be soon.

some thoughts on the SLI issue...first, remember to think 'forward', too...don't just think about games you have now but games that will come out later....most will be optimized for SLI and will make better use of the configuration.

also, MS is well aware of the issues w/ Vista and SLI and it is to be one of the main things (supposed to be, but ultimately who knows i guess) addressed in the upcoming service pack.

just some thoughts!

later,
pat!

Service Pack one is out. And there is no increase in SLI performance that I can see using my home box.

Although the system seems much more stable.

price also makes the difference, spending 4000+ doesnt really appeal to me

Still pricey, but a great technology for notebooks. The prices will drop, eventually.

good to hear the systems become more stable

Maybe Alienware will offer Penryn with the M17x?
