Dell is tightening it's grasp on AW as the days go on...

I see it more as a symbiotic relationship than anything else. Dell seems to be leaving AW alone for the most part- They are just helping by linking the AW website on their own site. Now when you start to see outrageous changes to AW's products etc, then that is when Dell is getting too involved with AW's business practices.

I didn't say that is was a bad grasp though..you are right. Dell is helping AW a lot by linking to AW on their site. Not very many people know about AW.

this caused some rumors around the internet that AW was gonna cancel the m17x (which i dont believe) but things that support this are the delays, and the fact that it would directly compete with Dells notebook where as the m15x is a one of a kind...

IMO, If AW was going to cancel the m17x, they would not have lowered the price for the m9750. Besides, they still have a lot of kinks to work out of the new designs and GPU's. It's just a little unfortunate that Dell got the head start with the 8800m GTX's SLi. AW is just being cautious for the time being.

I did notice one very bad aspect of the Dell/AW relationship. $300 worth of tax on the desktop I just ordered, forcing me to forgo a second set of Ozma 7's and the 7.1 hi fi card...no biggie, but still, now that it's dell, everywhere in the nation gets taxed...BUMMER!

pat!

Pad11! When I bought my m5550 last year, I had to pay over $100 for taxes. Can't believe you had to pay $300. I think it depends on really how much one spends before adding the sales tax.
I don't remember paying tax on my 7700 over three years ago. I did pay a $100 for shipping though. Thats unfortunate as it makes the price a little higher.

spartan, yeah, it's definitely state-based and in Pa. it's 6%! So since AW replaced my dead 7700 and I ordered a desktop (who needs another AW lappy when I gots me an Xotic Sager 9262 a'comin!) the tax reached $300! A real kick in the teeth when I didn't expect it!

later,
pat!

Well here's an update on my m5550,

They ordered a new 7600 go video card that just came in last Friday. And they are going to burn in my machine on Monday. I asked if anything else was replaced and the AW tech said that only the GPU and Hard Drive was replaced...So right now it seems like I might get my lappy back in the same condition as before.( last 2 GPU swaps didn't help the problem at all.) But, I'm going to wait and see if the "skipping" video is fixed this time. I have a feeling that I will be getting a replacement.

Yea, and I'll remember to put the sales tax in account if I do end up with a replacement. haha

I'll keep you guys posted.

I wish you good luck with that Spartan.

An update on my machine: My m5500 is running along beautifully with Vista Ultimate and ELive Linux ina dual-boot configuration. I was having a huge problem getting Vista to load properly but I found out what the issue was and corrected it. I also was having trouble getting Vista to recognize my Nvidia 6600 gpu so I downloaded the AW driver from the m5550 in order to get it to work. I had flashing of the screen using this driver so I got one of the MobileForce drivers from this forum and it works flawlessly! I am so impressed with the Mobile Force gpu drivers.

Hey mb, thanks!! haha

I'm glad that you got your m5550 up and running. The Mobile Force gpu drivers are awesome indeed. I used them on my 7600 go and they do pretty well in games. Did you have to get a BIOS update to be able to run Vista?

spartan, good luck man, I hope this is coming to a solid end for you. If it knocks out again, it's really time for them to step up and refund you, i think!!

later,
pat!

haha. I thought that I was the only one who noticed that....

I have a theory on m17x delays.

Right now, according to many people, a lot of the delays in shipping m15xs is the 8800m GTX. If they have problems getting out m15xs on time, they'd have twice as much of a problem getting out m17xs with TWO 8800m GTXs.

That makes sense. The last thing that AW is more troubles. But, a lot of people are waiting for the m17x though. Many have jumped for Sager or Dell because of the long wait. It'll be interesting to see the m17x be released sometime this month.

As much as I hate to say it, I'm one of those who just couldn't wait any longer. After some 5 (or more?) months of waiting I've given up on the m17x and just bought the new desktop Area-51, complete with Extreme quad-core proc, 9800 GX2, BD burner, 1TB HD and 4GB DDR3 RAM. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should change my HD to the RAID 0 option.

Oh well, at least I stayed in the family
