Weird though , look at the specs :
8700GT

256 bit memory interface is awesome . Slightly lower core frequency but more processors . Lets hope itll overcloak w/o any issues .

Which one would you get, the single 15.4" or the SLI 17"? Personally I've always wanted a sweet 15.4" gaming laptop to be released, so that'd probably be the one I end up getting.

I just speced one out with the 15.4" UXGA, single 8800m GTX, 2x512MB RAM (cheaper to just buy 2x2GB @ newegg), 80GB SATA (again cheaper to just upgrade @ newegg), lightscribe DVD burner, and the T7500. Now if only I could remove the Vista option to save on money... Ether way, the total was is only $2,420 shipped. It may just be time to eBay my E1705

those specs are actually pretty disappointing... 96 stream processors compared to the 112 and 128 of the desktop cards is pretty gimpy, as are the clock speeds. I wonder if it has a 65nm core like the new 8800 GT? if not, it's going to be hot and a poor overclocker... if it does though, it could be a very strong performer.

also I would never buy an alienware, mainly due to the styling and their non-saavy consumer base.

What we need is Dell to release their 8800m GTX model (just to keep things competitive with Alienware) then have someone figure out a mod to make it work in the i9400/E1705/M1710 Hey we can all dream can't we?
Also, according to the Inquirer, the 8800M GTX should be debuting on the 17th so we should see it cropping up in other brands. i.e. Dell.

Nah , im gona stick with 17" . More room for adequate cooling , better upgrade options ( ? ) . In general i like 17 inchers more . But the idea of a very strong gaming laptop in 15" segment is realy sweet .
Im still gona w8 though . See if DELL upgrades M1730 ( they should ) . Once they do i wont hesitate a single minute .

Looks like it's time to pull the trigger YAY. Hoefully they will be offering it really soon.

The current 8800gts desktop card "only" has 96 stream processors, and it is one hell of a performer. I'm sure this card will rock the mobile world.
the card is probably not going to be that powerful
this is why.

If it was this powerful why on earth would they put it in a 15"???

they wouldn't even put a single 7900 in a 15"
just because a 7900 wasn't in a 15" doesn't mean an 8800 can't be in one; alienware probably has a better cooling solution and given the time it took nvidia to release this card it probably won't run *too* hot for a 15"er
post #18 of 126
I wouldn't say screen size is a good indicator of thermal performance. Heck most 15" chassis are about the same weight, depth and thickness as 17"ers minus a little horizontal width.

That's not to say more efficient thermal designs aren't possible, and if these are truly next-gen 65nm parts with all the benefits the smaller die shrink brings, then its not much of a stretch to put a single 8800M GTX in a 15" chassis.

Main indicator of how much cooling a notebook has is how thick it is... case in point: M1730... now that's an ungodly beast of machine, without the guts to justify its size IMHO. Hopefully SLI 8800Ms will change that.

I think Dell will release the 8800M GTX very soon.
Remember that they own Alienware, so they don't need to compete eachother

time will tell. and the REAL WORLD benchmarks will too
