T40 freeze

Hi Folks,

So, yes, I've got T40. Just recently it stopped working correctly and here you have the history of illness.

During past few months it happened several times that the screen of the unit went black first, then scrambled, sometimes it went back to normal. It always happened when the unit was moved or pushed somehow.

Recently it went worse because the unit freezes now during the normal operation. Sometimes it does not start-up at all (power is on, LEDs go up, but nothing happen on the screen), other times it starts-up and freezes at certain stage (either during boot up, or during the operation). This time the unit is not moved at all!

Does anybody have any idea what is wrong?

Have you ever got similar behaiour?

I would appriciate your feedback

Cheers,
macias

might be a bit late to help this guy but this problem is a bad video chip on the motherboard, very common on t40 series laptops especially if they have been overheated previously - the solder joints on the video chip break loose from the motherboard.

Best fix is a brand new motherboard but you probably wont like the cost - even obn ebay they sell for $150+

Hope this helps someone.

Your video processor is not making good electrical contact with the motherboard. You can confirm this by removing the keyboard and pushing lightly on the processor while you start the machine. It will probably work fine until you remove pressure from the processor. Unfortunately, you need a new motherboard, since a processor BGA reflow is expensive.
