Acer Aspire 5102 trouble

Hi, I'm new here so forgive me if I don't have all the rules straight. I've been getting the BSOD error on my PC. The main ewrror is 0x000000f4 but I sometimes get the 77 error as well. Most times i need to reboot and then I get the 200 fixed hard disk 0 failed error . If I click F! i get yet another error, PXE.61 error and this takes my rebooting quite a few times in order to get windows xp (media center edition) to come uo it stays on for a while (the length of time is getting shorter and shoryer these days) and then I have to go through the entire scenario over again. I'm trying to remove the files and programs that I actually care about off this comp. I contacted Acer tech support and was told that it most likely a HArd drive problem and that it would need to be replaced They had the wrong warranty ending date for me and after providing proof of purchase, they changed it to 11/23/07. Now that I have about 8 days left on my warranty. the tech support person told me to purchase the extended warranty because if I ship it to them and the warranty expires, I will have to pay for the service. Now my question is this. I'm not too sure that it would be worth shipping it to them for repairs I will have to pay $99 for the warranty plus tax and At least $100 to ship it back to them. On top of that I have read horror stories about people who sent their comps in to be repaired and it being returned to them with scratches on the LCD, initial problems not repaird or additional problems after the comp was returned to them. I'd much rather carry it in to a shop but was told their are no local repair shops in my city except for geek squad and they will charge me since I didn't purchase my comp from them. WHat would you do take it to a local repair shop or pay the bugcks to extend the warranty and then pay to have it shipped to be repaired? Another reason why I am leery is because I bought a HP laptop last year. the Ac adapter jack ont he comp was loose so I shipped it to HP to have it repaired. they had my comp for almost a month and then told me the motherboard, keyboard, speakers, and LCD display was unsalvageable and that it would cost me over $1000 to have it replaced(i only paid $369 for it on black Friday). They also told me that I had a liquid spill which was a total lie as I keep my laptop in my bedroom and I never eat or drink in my bedroom.( come to find out that loose jacks are a known problem with some Hp laptops I have read horror storeies about Acer using the dreaded liquid spill excuse too and I don't want to go through the drama again. ANy ideas or help. Are the BSOD errors definitely the fault of a faulty hard drive?

Thanks, all, and please forgive my longwinded ness this is the second lap top in 2 years that started giving me problems within 2 weeks of my warranty expiring.

Well using my computer repair business as an example, I charge $40/hour, a bargain huh?! When I replace a DC jack, that's at least 2 hours of labor plus the cost of the jack. And if I have to replace a hard drive, I have to ghost it or pull any files off that are recoverable, and buy a new hard drive. So that's at least 2 hours as well plus the cost of a new hard drive. I doubt you're going to find a nice cheap repair guy like me in your area unless it's a really small town like mine. Sooo your extended warranty option might be your best bet as far as saving $$$.

....unless you want to mail it to me! haha.

Anyway, yeah sounds like your hard drive is going out. Pull it out, hook it to another comp and do a chkdsk /f on it to hopefully get it readable and pull off any files you need. There's no real easy way to save your programs, you'll just have to save any of the data you've created with them and reinstall them later. Hope you have your restore cds! You might be able to put it back in the laptop and boot up enough to copy your files off if you don't have another comp to hook the hard drive to.

Good luck!

Well finding a cheap repair service isn't the problem. My problem is that I want to make sure that they actually repair my comp I don't want to ship it to have it repaired and then they tell me something about a liquid spill or my motherboard being toast. I also don't want them to repair the problem but create additional problems in the process and themn I;m left shipping it back and forth over and over again. I've read plenty of Acer repair service horror stories. I'd much rather carry it in to a place and be present while they are disassembling my comp so that I can prove the condition that it wa in before they started working on it.

Response to Acer failure

I'm currently facing a similiar issue with my Acer 3000. I purchased it in March 2006 and in June 2006 (3 months later) my harddrive went bad. Recently (September/October 2007), my computer went bad again (I kept receiving errors) and Acer would not help me since I was out of warranty. I took it into this great Computer repair shop (December 2007) and they informed me it was the harddrive again; they also mentioned I have a bad motherboard and that is the reason my harddrive messed up. I believe I was given a bad motherboard to begin with since my computer broke down in just 3 months of purchase. The real kicker is when Acer replaced my harddrive in July of 2006, the computer repair shop informed me they repaired it with a harddrive dated Dec 2005. This means they gave me a 7 month old harddrive. Is that even legal?

the acer 5100 series has a huge logic board issues. it can be repaired but requires re-flowing of a b.g.a. chip.

What symptoms does this create?

you will have issues where the unit wont detect hard drives, no post/video. its a failure of a southbridge bga chip and sometimes they fry and need to be replaced. if its not friend then only needs to be reflowed with a bga machine.
