Nice

oooh A zip drive how 90's

Nice setup. Are you planning on raiding the drives? Is this going to be a gaming machine or is it going to be a workstation? 2gb of RAM is a bit excessive for gaming.
post #4 of 31
no offense, but dunt be dumb, a 9600xt sux. Take out 1 gb of RAM (which u wont need anyway, 1 gb is plenty) and at least buy a 9800 pro, u wont be sry. I mean wen HL2 and D3 come out ur gonna wish you had bought a 9800xt or 9800 pro, but its gonna be too late... best of luck

What make you decide on Maxtor hard drives over Seagate or Western Digitals SATA offerings?

1) you can never have too much ram.
2) im not reallly sure what im going to use it for yet, just needed a new project. but i will likely do everything on it, some gaming, networking, host my websites, do my programming ect... it will take over as my new main machine.
3) whats wrong with the 9600XT? what games are out now that it cant play? if you need a 9800XT to play the newer games then they wont sell very well.
4) yes i will raid the drives.
post #8 of 31
how can you say 1gb is enough , you dont play planetside then !!!!!

the more memory the better .
post #9 of 31
actually if u go above 2 gb, it negates performance, and the 9800xt is selling pretty well.

1) I havent gone above 2GB.
2) the 9600 XT can play pretyt much every game out maxed out smoothly.

the 9800XT is a great card, but if it was required to play newer games then no one would be able to play them

It's not a beast without a WD Raptor 10,000 RPM drive with 8 meg cache, I love mines.

7200 rpm is weak.

Also you could of got a better looking case, kinda tacky.

Here is my case, it's sweet and elegant.

Now that's pimp...

15,000rpm raid 0 > 10,000rpm raid 0

whew you'd need some cooling for that

P.S. I think thats what Hypersonic uses for their Gaming Desktops.
post #14 of 31
Good luck if the processor is a PRESSHOTTTT.
post #15 of 31
I don't think he said it was a prescott. A prescott AFAIK is called a 3.2E, right?
post #16 of 31
jamaster, can you give a breakdown of how much you paid for the individual parts and the total? I want to get a sense of how much the total was for doing it yourself versus me buying a cheap desktop from a reseller like cyberpower

Dude quit Hatin!

whats tacky about my case? it pretty plain. all black with a door in the front and clear window on the side... its this case here:
http://www.atxcases.com/Cases/reloadblack.htm

also 7200 RPM's si far from "weak"... its not 10000, but it is nto weak... benchmark scores will verify that. i

i do like your case, in fact i have it! its going to be the server im building next, which wont really be all that powerful, but it will take over for the p2 400(poseidon from the pictures) machine that is currently my web/dns/email server.

as for a breakdown of what i paid for everything this is the prices i paid at the time, some may have gone up or down since:

case + powersupply/4 fans = 59.99 (atx cases)
Mobo = 88.99
processor = 243.00 (newegg)
Memory = 144.00 (newegg)
HDD's = 2X 180.00 (mwave)
DVD burner = 159.99 (new egg)
Floppy 5.99 (newegg)
zip drive 9.99 (local pc shop)
Thermal monitor 25.00 (forget the site)
cd burner/dvd combo = 44.99 (newegg)
6-1 ard reder 23.99 (forget the site)
Cables maybe 20$?

total 1,185.93

kinda high but im sure you could get it for MUCH less if you when with 1 250GB HDD or even 2 amaller HDD's. you probably dont need the CD burner/dvd combo drive... i got it because 1 it was cheap, 2 it filled a slot, and 3 its read sprredd is alot faster than the dvd burner. the zip drive is obviously totally unnecessary, the card reader is ncie if you need it and cheap...

you could shave 40-50$ off the processor by going to a 3.0

im sure you could build a kick ass system similar to this minus some belsl and whistels and get it for like 800-1000

edit: oh yeah and xp pro off of new egg for 134$

I dont know how much you kno abt computers, (well at least you built yours ill give you that) but why the hell would you spend the extra cash on 2gb of ram that youll never even touch for a better part of two years instead of getting a 9800xt? Look at you ****ing systems setup, its the ultimate gaming machine......but guess what you over did the ram AND you got a crap ass video card (sry guys im just talking abt for this kind of money and this caliber of machine) My advice to you, make a system that you can actually use, the extra gig of ram will just sit there, I have 1gig of ram in my system and I have yet to use it all up during run time, and I do a ****load of multitasking, and get a better graphics card because you will really miss the whole experience of a high-end gaming maching without at least a 9800pro..........come on man!!!!!

A 9800pro 128mb is relaly the best bang for the buck, $218 for a retail sapphire. It's only about $50-$60 more than a 9600XT.

you can never have too much RAM.

as for the 9600 XT... a sh*t card? come on.

if thats the truth then every 51m out there has a sh*t card. its not a 9800, but it plasy every game i ahve at 1600x1200 with everythign amxed out.

also money isnt an issues, its not like i told myself i had to sacrafice a better card for mroe RAM.

i admit i dont know much about graphics cards, although i would consider my self to be an expert on pretty much everything else. i just got into computer gaming like 6 months ago.

but since eeryone seems so adimant about it im going to go out and purchase a 9800xt today, and mvoe the 9600xt into my dell which currently just has the crapp on board graphics.

also can anyone recommend a game that would push the graphics card to the limit.. id liek to copare the 9600 in my 51m to the 9600xt that will be in my dell to the 9800XT that will be in my new machine
