9860 - Vertical lines at boot screen :( wont boot!

Hello again after a long time..

I have been an unlucky owner of a Sager 9860 since December 2004, and until now I had to change the motherboard twice, and now I seem to have a problem with the video card.

Before I go on ordering the video card, I wanted to make sure if my problem is caused by the vid card.

When I boot up the machine, at the boot screen I have these very thin blue vertical lines at the background all over the monitor. At the detecting HD screen they dissappear. Then they come back again at the windows logo, and after that the comp goes to a black screen and windows doesnt load up.

If I go in safe mode, I get to the login screen where you choose administrator or user name, and that screen loads flawless with no lines or graphical distortion.

I right click on desktop and in display settings I see

"... on unknown monitor" where it normally says "Nvidia 6800 go on unknown monitor"

however when I go to device manager, I can see the Nvidia 6800 go.

When I am in safe mode, there is no graphical distortion on the desktop either. But I can never get to windows without the safe mode.

Things I have tried:

- System Restore
- Symantec Antivirus full scan
- Reducing screen resolution, turning off graphics acceleration from full to none

Things I have not tried:

- Formatting the HD (i dont think it matters since the lines appear at the boot screen)
- Doing something about the bios.

Now I would like to ask the experienced users here to tell me if the problem is from my video card and if i need to have it replaced. One online retailer i found told me 400dollars for the Geforce Go 6800.

Please let me know what is causing the problem, and if i need to buy the video card, please tell me some online retailers in the USA or in Europe that I can contact.

Thank you.

That's what it looks like. Disable the vid card through the control panel in safe mode and see if you can reboot normally (it will boot Windows in a low res mode).

You might want to try removing and reseating the vid card yourself (the GPU card is probably static sensitive so make sure you ground yourself). If that fixes it (or if the paste is dry), you should wipe the old thermal paste off the GPU and heatsink and apply new paste.

thanks for your reply. i will try manually reinstalling the vid card, and disabling the vid card to see if that works..

well i tested the disable video card option and yes it let me log on windows and use it at a low resolution from where i am typing this response now..

does this confirm the thought that the video card is somehow messed up and needs to be replaced??

when i try to enable the vid card in windows, it goes back to the black screen

It increases the likelyhood of that being the case. Theoretically, there might be a bad connection between the connector and the motherbaord, or a bad trace on the motherboard itself. I suspect it might also be the case that the driver was somehow corrupted, but you could eliminate the possibility of a software problem with a format/re-install. I suspect the only way to be sure the video card is defective, is to replace the card with another one that you know works.

first thing you need to try is to re-seat your video card.
