M1330 with 64GB SSD - just brilliant

Hey Guys,

Thought I'd post in here because the 10"-15" forum seems to be virtually dead.

I just took delivery of a new M1330 with a 64GB SSD. I've not seen any discussion from anyone else about this drive in the M1330 so I thought I'd start one.

Boot up times are impressive but the best thing is that this machine runs so cool! It really is a laptop because you can use it on your lap without needing skin grafts after. There is a little heat in the area of the touch pad and either side of it but it's not uncomfortable.

SSD is definitely the way forward for ultraportables, and indeed other sizes of laptop and desktops too, but it really comes into its own with a small machine like the M1330 or the Toshiba R500 which was my other potential choice.

I went with the M1330 because: the availability of the Toshiba is virtually non-existent; I didn't like the keyboard and track pad texture on the Toshiba; the M1330 has a serious CPU in it a 2.2GHz T7500, not a ULV, so it's a real performer; the screen is glossy which I actually prefer and I got the internal HSDPA modem on the M1330 which wasn't available yet for the Toshiba even if I could find one.

Word, Excel, etc. start up almost instantaneously on this thing. No waiting around forever like on my last machine which was a XPS Gen2. Bang, it's there. Very cool and a flavour of great things to come with this technology.

This machine is just incredible and I'm delighted with it so much kudos to Dell. My only complaint is that the DVD drive sounds like a 1970s video player, and churns and bangs away for ages, but I guess I can live with that. Otherwise, it's damn near perfect.

Any questions or tests you guys would like me to try out I'll do my best although there are already benchmarks out there.

I'm planning on putting Ubuntu on it and the 64-bit version of Vista Business or maybe Ultimate(should've gone for that in the first place, my only boo-boo with this machine). Anyone know what the best avenue is for getting an upgrade from Business to Ultimate cheap?

Cheers,

jahboo

Thanks for posting. I saw one of those at a Dell kiosk today at the local mall. First time that I have seen one in person. Very nice. You have a great little machine there.

Yes, it is, thanks. My best purchase for a long time!

Looking forward to getting my HSDPA up and running. It'll be a real road warrior's machine then.

Cheers,

I would love one too but 64gb is a little small for my needs. If they could double the size for the same cost, I would be tempted!

I would like to see a M1530 that would support the SSD for the OS and an additional drive for files. Between AutoCAD and PhotoShop my needs keep getting bigger on the road.

Nice to hear you are enjoying, these SSds are a glimpse into our laptop future!

Enjoy!

I've been looking at the Large Business Precision models exactly for this purpose - they offer the SSD drive plus a secondary/traditional HD option. They only offer the 80gb drive which is odd but there must be a reason. Why they do not offer this in Small/Medium business I have no idea. Anyway .....

Thanks for the post Jahbo ... I was wondering if anyone had comments about this option. I'm going with the 64gb from the smal business portal if I can't finure out how to get a 2nd drive.

Yes I have one too and love the SSd drive and it's cool.
And quiet as well.
When the fan comes on it's just a little silent and when off
nothing!!
I think I live with the size of the hard drive because of all
the external drives that are out there.

I guess my only reservation other than paying the $750 upgrade for the SSD is that the capacity will soon be doubled or quadrupled for the same price.

At least, I think it will.
