Processor Conumdrum

Now that I've found this 'secret' area, I want to pick a few minds about processors.

I am just starting to build a new gaming desktop, and am sort of stuck trying to decide which way to go regarding processors.

You can get an E6850 (3.0GHz) or a Q6700 (2.66GHz) for about the same price (around $280). Should I do dual or quad?

Either way, the MB I get will support both, and the new 45nm processors. I was originally going with the ASUS Stirker Extreme until I saw the price ($300 ). Now I am leaning heavily toward the EVGA 680i.

Any personal experiences are welcomed.

That's what I was thinking.

The QX9650 is a true monster.

Still, without regard to price (well, $400 or less anyway), dual or quad?

q6600 for about 280 out the door, oc to 3.2ghz.....A monster for the price, and if you wait, you'really only lose some cache on the processor cause the speed wont be any faster.

I would not get a quad. I had the QX6700. It always ran too hot. It finally died on me. It was an OEM chip with no warranty. Just letting you know.

I was stupid. I should have been much more careful. That cost me a ton.

Get one at a store in a retail box.

I'd vote quad. More future-proof. Also most can be OC'd easily into the 3ghz range anyway.

No no you're not stupid.

Im trying to remember if i ever purchased an OEM CPU. I think thats teh only part of a computer you shouldn't OEM for the warranty reasons. Warranties are so worth the extra money.

my friend has a qx6700 and he has no problems with his at all...I have a q6600 oc'd to 3.2ghz for about a month now, zero overheating problems and its running almost 24/7 with about 6 hours a day of gaming.

my Q6600 is a whore limited at 2.4ghz but most OC amazing like rockin's

Lol that sucks.

Are there any BF / CM deals on CPUs, perhaps newegg?
Donkey, i'm telling you unload that mobo and get a different one...THe speed diff of my comp from 2.4 to 3.2 is INSANEEEE, its like two diff computers.
well that may be happening. computer got returned today and is currently DOA. I love waiting 1 month for nothing to change!!!

Requested immediate rebuild or money back. If I get money back, I'll probably go with the gigabyte DS4 you have

I've rolled OEM before and not gotten bit. It's luck of the draw. If you're feeling lucky you might get a good savings and a good product. It's not a matter of smarts or careful it's more luck I think.

So I guess everybody's vote is quad...

i want to see what other 45nm chips will be out soon aside from the 9650. Although I'd like to pick one up, $1200 is a bit steep...

Hey pdonket, can you tell me briefly what happened to your quad core? Or you can direct me to the thread where you post what happened. Just curious. Thanks.

Yep I can describe it quickly, no big thing.

First off, the thing starts off at about 30-35C and tops at 50-55C under load @ 2.4ghz. Now temp doesn't seem to be the problem as many on [H] hit VERY high temps are they seem to stay stable. However for my Q6600, if it even gets clocked as high as 2.6ghz when I stress test it, it crashes the system

Those new 45nm chips are freaking amazing and I'd personally wait until I could afford it/the price drops.
