Most major etailers still have this on a pre-order basis. This might (or might not) explain the shortage:
Stock problems hit the 8800GT
How many are actually out there?

A READER has pointed out that it is dead hard to get a XFX Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512mb card because of mysterious 'stock errors'.
He tells us that there appears to be a discrepancy between the numbers of XFX Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512mb cards that were in the market last week and this week.
Last week the card was listed as being in stock with by CCL with more than 30 cards. After placing his order, none were forthcoming and CCL was claiming that there was a stock error. Our reader was told that only 15 cards would be in stock on Thursday.
A week later CCL says that it might have five cards in stock, maybe, next week.
Our reader did a bit of ring around and found that Dabs have the XFX but also showing only available next week and even on CCL the other make's of the 8800GT are out of stock until next week.
In otherwords what you are seeing is that all the shops are only promising small numbers of the cards which they do not seem to have yet.
Our reader asked a few of his mates and discovered they were all in the same boat waiting for cards but being promised that there will be small numbers arriving next week. All suppliers are saying they had a mysterious stock error.
As we reported on Wednesday the first batches of 8800GT have been reporting a few teething troubles. It is possible that Nvidia have put the brakes on until it is fixed. At time of going to press they have not told us they are doing this. ยต
