The designs look fine to me, but the proof is in the benchmarks...
the 8800m and 8700m both are rated at 35w. the 7950 actually generates more heat so the thick case design is not related to the gpu. the reason why the case is thicker is to better support the extreme processor in terms of cooling and maybe the 3rd hard drive option has something to do with it.
i also want to note that these new offerings just scream "script kiddy" with all their shiny plastic and circus lights, just like the dell m1730. the m9750 with it's supperior case and design is the better option as you can simply upgrade to the 8800m cards when they become available next month...and will still cost you less than the m17x.
