Silly question - alien head on the lid

I am wondering, is the alienhead that is on top of the lid supposed to be light? or does it only come on at certain times?

Which model laptop do you have? On the more recent models, you have the ability to hit Fn + F12 or another "F" key to toggle it on/off.
