M6300 - Replacing dell 1600m with 8700m bios

Thread Starter
We have an M6300 wi/1600m v-card. Our problem is pairing it up with the Dell 30" monitor.

1600m only supports Single Link DVI for a max resolution of 1920x1200 while the 8700m sports Dual Link DVI and supports 2550x1600 rez. (in case you were wondering, the maximum resolution the monitor will offer up with Single Single Link DVI is 800x1200 :-(

Are the video bios on the M6300 integrated with the mb bios? And if the bios are not integrated, can a PCI video card be used in the Dell M6300 Docking Ports PCI expansion slot in the event the bios flash does not work? This would be in order to reflash the 1600m with its original bios.

We dont mind trading off some of the extended CAD benefits of the 1600m in order to get the 30" monitor back online.

Is there a Dell 8700m bios somewhere out there?

Help?

This is safe? Can I replace my 3600M bios by a 8800M GTS' ?

hmm, if the bios update is smart enough, it will stop you if it does not like it. But again, in your case, if it is not broken, why bother?

cheers ...

I would like to improve gaming performance
But I'm ok with my Quadro...

The difference between Quadro and GeForce performance when running the same GPU is NEGLIGIBLE at best. You might gain a few points in 3D Mark but that'll translate to no noticable improvement in actual games. And the only way you'll run a higher resolution is if you're running an external display. I don't think the DVI port on the M6300 is electronically a dual link interface in the first place either. It's physically dual link, but there's no electronic connection for the other pins.
