Precision M6300 or XPS M1730

After about 3 years with my Inspiron 9200 I'm in need of a new laptop. I'm trying to decide between the Precision M6300 and the XPS M1730 (other recommendations would of course be fine).

This laptop will be my only computer to be used at both work and home. I don't mind lugging it around as I'm used to that with my 9200. So I'm definitely looking for a true desktop replacement.

For business, I'm often working on numerous applications at the same time. It's not uncommon for me to have Word, Excel, Outlook, IE, Firefox, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, etc. all running and being used together. So I'm looking for something that can handle the simultaneous use of numerous business applications.

I do use an external monitor, keyboard, mouse at the office. Currently I just plug these all directly into my 9200 using DVI and USB. It would be nice to have a docking station if it truly worked (the last one I had didn't seem to handle everything). However, I'm willing to give up the docking station / port replicator for performance if necessary. As long as it has plenty of usb inputs (or I guess I could just get a hub, might be easier anyway). DVI/HDMI would be nice (see below for more).

When I travel, I enjoy watching DVDs and Slingbox on a large screen (thus the 17 inch + requirement). At home, I'll occasionally plug my computer into my TV (thus the DVI / HDMI nice to have).

I also enjoy gaming a bit. Not as important as business, of course. But I definitely enjoy online games (e.g. WOW) as well as installed entertainment.

I appreciate any recommendations on which new laptop to go with.

Thanks.

if you are HARDCORE GAMER! then m1730.

if you occaisionaly game and mostly are a HARDCORE WORKER, then go with the m6300.

it's a no-brainer really.

working with occasional gaming =m6300

i just re-read your first post.

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking at the configuration and trying to decide, presuming I go with the M6300, which processor. The Core 2 Duo T7800 or the Core 2 Duo Extreme X7900. I usually go for the best processor available given I'll have this thing for the next 3 years but is it worth another $600?

I presume 2GB of memory is sufficient. It's another $440 to go to 4GB.

i would go with the x7900.

for sure.

get the lowest ammount of ram, then upgrade via ebay or newegg for less than 60-80 bux for a 2gb chip

Based on the recommendations here I decided to go with the M6300 with minimum RAM (via initial purchase). I want to buy my upgraded memory. The system comes with ddr2-667. Will I obtain a performance improvement if I buy faster memory (ddr2-800)?

Yes, but it won't run at 800MHz The DDR2 800MHz will drop to 667MHz, as will its timings from CL5 to CL4, and you want a lower CL. In all honesty however, unless the DDR2 800MHz is the same price as the 667MHz, I would just get the 667MHz as the performance difference in the CL isn't that noticeable.
