M7700 Scratch Build Completed AGAIN !

Hi Guys

Lets hope it lasts a bit longer than last time.
It has had a new coat of paint and a recycled Mobo. (Thanks to Damned303 )
I have managed to carry out a repair to the Raid controller of a version 6.1 motherboard. Very tricky but it works as you can see from the pictures. I am still looking for a pair of lid latches and as one comes up an Inverter with the extra socket for the Alien eyes.

I have a few D900T spares so I will be on the lookout for another M7700 case.

Hi Hoshie
Its not for the faint hearted. The case needs stripping down to its bare shell.
I did paint mine but I would seriously recommend you take it to a professional paint shop.
As you can see it is possible and white would look great.

To a paint Shop.. Good Idea..
But what must i do with my 7700? Complete to unscrew?
Hope you understand..

Hi Hoshie
The paint shop will only want the computer case with nothing else attached. The computer will have to be dismantled completely screw by screw. The items to be removed are Motherboard, keyboard, hard drives, cd drives, DJ control panel, power panel, speakers, fans, screen and any other accessories attached.
If you are not confident in this task then it shouldn't be attempted.

How loang does it take to dismantled the 7700?

Congrats, Tricky. 'Glad to see you got that bad boy running again. I'm even happier to hear that you managed to perform the RAID chip swap on your own. :-)

I've still got two bad motherboards from Ztronics (they're not responsive at all, so it looks like I'm stuck with these dead boards.) In the end, I'll probably record a video my repairs on those boards and post that to Youtube over the holidays.

Do you have your own air compressor and painting gear, or was that paint job done with off-the-shelf spray paint? That shade of blue is pretty close to the blue alienware cases used for the AMD version.

It al depends on you how capable you are. if you have had no experience is the field then I would suggest you get someone who knows what they are doing. If you do know what you are doing then it should only take a couple of hours.

Omagian has kindly posted this dismanle post which helped me greatly.

The Raid chip swap was a nightmare that took hours to complete with a large magnifying glass and a very steady hand with a standard soldering iron.

I have 2 version 5 boards that I will look at later. The paint job was done with cans from a local car parts shop. Don't tell anyone but the colour is FIAT Capri Blue with a white undercoat and a clear coat. Its the closest I could get. Looks close enough for me.

You know me ... everything is done on a budget.

I would be very interested (and I am sure others will) in seeing the finished videos.

Well done M8. Glad that the MOBO helped you out. The IDE cable that you wanted will be in the post first thing Monday. Thats a realy good paint job as well. I might have a go myself. Did you use standard cellulose paint? And did you use a primer coat designed for plastic?

Hi Damned303

The paint came from good old Halfords cellulose. Fiat- Capri Blue. Its the closest I could get.
I did use a white undercoat for plastic and a clear finish coat. Didnt come out to bad . There are a couple of small blemishes not that you would notice.
I have always wanted a blue one. I was tempted with high gloss black !
Maybe the next build once I have got another case.

Hi!
Have you screw up the 7700 alone with this Instruction?
http://www.notebookforums.com/post2449928-30.html
Or have you done this without any Instruction?

What about this? Have you leave it in in the Time it was painted?
See what is in the red Ring..

Sorry for my English..

Hi Hoshie
I took my M7700 apart without any instruction. But it looks like You have been busy.
I cant wait to see the finished laptop.
I removed everything including the fan assembly and any circuit boards. The USB board and the Card reader.
All that was left was the plastic.
PS your English is fine....

Hi!
Thanx to answer.. Im beginning maybe Sunday.. In this moment i get all information i can get, to make all fine.. This pictures are from omagian..
After painting, can you see the small signs on the 7700. Mean the wireless lan, Battery or Firewire Symbol, or are all gone?
What have you do in the time you screw up the Alienware. Dpo you made Photos or something, to get all on the same place..?

You must remove the power board also. This is the board with the main powoer on button.
I have a good memory and did not need photo's to put it back together.

I like that red Diablo Hoshie

Do you guys know if there is a way to find out the resolution of the screen? I have a dead 7700 (mobo is fried) but I'm thinking of trading out the screen if it is a 1920 x 1200 as I have a 1680 x 1050. I can't boot the system, and you guys seem to know how to disassemble all of this. Is there any way for me to ID the screen resolution, say, on the outside of the LCD panel?

Hi.

The only way of finding out the screen resolution is by the part number on the back of the screen. Can you get access to it?
