Strange noises & laptop not starting

Hi, I have an Apple iBook G4 and while playing my music in i-tunes today, it seemed to have trouble playing the songs all the way through without stopping. At intervals, it would pause and then a few seconds later continue the song. I turned my laptop off and after a few seconds, turned it back on again. The first couple of tries, it seemed to start up as normal except it wouldn't load the loading screen (big apple picture and circle of lights going around beneath it). And then finally, a picture of a folder flashed up on the screen with a question mark on it, but that was all. So I shut it down again and after a few more tires, it loaded the laoding screen but then got stuck there and there were some strange noises coming from the speakers. Am too chicken to turn it on again. What is happening??

Are you sure the noise from the speakers isn't actually coming from the hard disk?

I'm pretty sure you have a dead hard drive. I wouldn't start it up anymore until you have something where you can directly copy all your important data and back it up. Then you can get a new HDD and do a fresh reinstall.
