I think my graphic card is broken

I hope everything is ok but I'm getting a weird white vertical line , about 2 inches thick, all over my display, it doesn't matter if I'm browsing software, or just at boot screen, the line is there.

Weird thing is, it seems to randomly dissappear sometimes, but appears again when trying to shut down the lappy, is the first time this thing happen to my display and I shuted down my lappy, hoping its propably a heat problem.

Here's a pic:

I hope that it doesn't be any gfx card problem...

I may suggest you try it on a external monitor

sounds like an LCD problem to me, I second dave-p's suggestion. if you're lucky it's just the flex cable.

Seems like its an LCD problem or a flex cable problem as stated before.

Thanks guy

Now how I know exactly wheres the problem?

I tried cloning my display to my TV and didn't get the white line, so I guess that means is not the video card.

Correct the problem could be in the flex cable or it could be the display.

Since the flex cable is much cheaper give it a try.

You can also try re-seating the flex cable and see if that changes anything.

I have had this problem before many times and there is a quick and easy fix for you.
Just throw your computer out the window. Trust me you will get no vertical lines at all after that and as it turns out you will get no picture either. Your welcome for this quick fix......

Answers like these don't help and bulk up the forums, making it harder for others to search for reasonable answers to their problems.

Just today...I got the same exact problem.

I didn;t touch the computer, nothing was installed.

sucks!

How long did you hook it up to the external monitor for?

I would give it at least a day on an alternate screen,

I think that I have found the problem.... this cable:

I will replace the cable soon. Meanwhile, the white 2" line on the screen is very intermittent. I really think it is the cable.

The new cable did not solve the problem.

rez,

If it is the LCD and your computer model qualifies you might be able to get it fixed for free. Look at the Dell replacing 17" LCDs post. It is stickied at the top of this forum but here is a direct link to the post. http://www.notebookforums.com/thread194782.html
Hopefully you can get this repaired for free.

And the problem will start as intermittent if the LCD is going bad, and it will get worse. In some cases, for a short time you can even "fix" the problem by a constant application of pressure to certain sections of the LCD but it will continue to get worse and eventually will give out completely. Good luck to you.
