1920 x 1200 reso compared to 1440 x 900 ?

Is there a noticeable different for gaming for these two screen resolutions?

I mean I know that 1920 x 1200 annoys the eyes for word-processing works or web-surfing since the font and stuff is "too small". But how about games?

Will it be a great trade-off?

Assume there are flexibility of getting external monitor with 1920 x 1200 resolution, and the laptop priority will be for both works and gaming. Thank you in advance.

the higher the resolution the more taxing it is on the graphics card for gaming. and wuxga is overkill on a 17" scale as the genera; fonts are too damn small. wish alienware offered wsxga glossy screen instead.

I see. But I was opting for the new upcoming m15x LOL. So if 17incher is already overkill and "too small", I bet m15x would be "ant-small".

Good thing and thanks for the info. That save my 200 USD instantly.

but how about from games point of view? Never mind u already answered my bad.

don't get wuxga on a 15" notebook. you will lose your eyesight.

wuxga on 17" gives you generous real estate but if you are going to be working on word documents all day your eyes will start to bleed. internet explorer is ok as you can scale the fonts bigger. gaming looks nice but you really want sli to handle this high resolution better. sometimes gaming can be tedious as the game fonts are too small themselves as you try to chat with someone and you end up putting your nose up to the screen to see what you are reading.

it's too bad alienware does not offer the glossy wsxga screen for 17" as that is the sweetspot. they force you to go wxga matte or wuxga glossy on their 17" models. the wuxga glossy is the better choice as the glossy screens makes the colors more vivid and offers a better resale value.

i also want to add for gaming that i try to play games in window mode (if the game offers it) which allows me to scale the game to any resolution without degrading picture quality. i do this because even for wsxga resolution the geforce 6800 does not run games well natively. for example, in supreme commander it allows me to run in a window mode and i can simply resize the window game box (like i would do with a web page) to anything i chose without losing picture quality. if i run the game in full screen mode and lower the resolution below the native wsxga the game looks very blurry.

@argh,

thanks for the reply. I understand that clearly now but I am not that familiar with wuxga or wsxga and stuff. So what is the difference between glossy wsxga with the wxga matte (I assume this is 1440 x 900) and the wuxga glossy (I assume this is 1920 x 1200). So what's wsxga?

However, I did own 1440 x 900 on m9700. For the that screen is already reflective which suck because u could see urself (like a mirror) while gaming or watching movie.

However, I am not familiar with ClearView Technology. That might cancel all the things I mention (not reflective and stuff I guess).

Hope u could clear this for me. Thank you in advance.

Oh, are u the one who ask on notebookreview about the LCD price and stuff for m9750?

I think wsxga is 1680 x 1050...?

For a 15" screen I'd go with 1440 x 900. I have the 1920 x 1200 screen on my m9700, and the only benefit for gaming is at the higher resolution you don't need Anti Aliasing so much, so I leave it off. Games look great, but I've played a few at 1440 x 900 and I really don't notice that much difference.

Clearview tech is the glossy screen. It's a contrast enhancing coating on the screen that will make things darker, and reflective, but it does add to the vibrance of the colors. The matte finish won't reflect light, so if you use your laptop on the go, that would probably be best.

I have an M9750 with the 1440x900 LCD and it is glossy. It might not be quite as glossy as the 1920x1200 but it is very glossy compared to any lcd that has a matte finish. I like it a lot. Before selecting the 1440 lcd, I asked Alienware about the differences and they said the difference in gloss is insignificant compared to the difference in the resolution.

i thought the wxga was matte and the wuxga was glossy on the m9750. thats good to know.

Alienwares LCD description is unintentionally misleading. The 1920x1200 has ClearView which sounds glossy to me but maybe it means something else. I can't imagine an LCD more glossy than the 1440.

If you are getting the 15.4" go with the 1440 x 900. I have a 15.4" now and I can't imagine it being any smaller.
I use a 24" Dell at work at 1920 x 1200 and that is pretty small.
I would go with the 1440 x 900 on the 17" as well, imo.

Thanks for all the advices guys.

To scott, thanks for mentioning the 24 incher at 1920 x 1200, that really helps. So if it's darn small on 17 incher laptop (even at 24" monitor is still considered pretty small), I guess 1440 x 900 will do just fine for me. And yeah, I saw u change ur siggy from "m9750 or ...." to m15x. Good choice, that is what I am going for as well. I need portability more than performance, so m15x has the perfect balance in terms of that.

I am somewhere in early 20s, and haven't need to wear any aids for my sight yet. Deciding and choosing what's right (for me individually I mean, not generally) is crucial for me. So I really appreciate all the thoughts and facts by you all. These have been so helpful. Thanks again.

Well I personlly love the 1900 x 1200 on my m9750. I love being able to fit several things on one screen (a web page takes only half the screen) I really don't mind the small font, I actually like it. And if you have Sli then the higher res will only make everything look better in games :P

game-wise,yeah u are rite. But when we are talking 15 incher like m15x, 1920 x 1200 is overkill. and m15x doesn't have SLi. I guess you miss the 15 incher part.

However, regards to that, if I am in the market for 17", probably 1920 x 1200 will be a good option for me. But 15", nah.

Some of this is subjective as Mikeyeg points out. Some people like the smaller fonts and icons. If you have an opportunity, go to Best Buy, Circuit City, a Dell Kiosk, etc.. and check out a 15" and 17" that runs these resolutions.
That's what I did when I was considering the m9750 and I know that I will be happy with the 1440 x 900 res.
You can always get an external monitor, but the 1920 x 1200 will be way to small on a 15.4" screen.

Well, I am almost 37 and things are not getting better.
I don't wear glasses, but I do like a resonable font size.
No lawyer text.

like u said, 1920 x 1200 on 15 incher is way too small. However, I'll try to see these config either in Best Buy or something. Or probably someone could do a printscreen so that at least we give us raw estimate on how the size would be.

My concern was actually specifically for Vista, since I have seen my friend XPS m1330 with Vista, the icons were HUGE. I had 1440 x 900 myself on previous m9700, which I considered perfect. It wasn't too small, and wasn't huge at all. But that was on XP. So for Vista which most probably the only option we will have on m15x, I don't really know.

I know that HammerHead had some screen shots of the m9750 I think with both 1920 x 1200 and 1440 x 900. I will see if I can find them if HH doesn't beat me to it.

I have seen the screen but on 17incher. I try to convince myself that 1920 x 1200 is unreadable, but it wasn't. The more I try to hate it the more I am comfortable with it.

Is there anyone could do a HUGE favor for us future/potential owners of m15x/m17x? I would like to see a screenshot (in specific) or even suggestion on how things are on 1920 x 1200 on 15 inch monitor.
