XP or Laptop Problem

Ok this is a long story but I will try to make it as brief as possible, but the story does lead up to my computer question; so bare with me. I got this Inspiron 2500 in late 2001 and my warranty expires this December. It was a refurbished laptop when I purchased it. About a month after having it, I got the blue screen error upon trying to start the computer if I remember right it was some kind of Kernel error; and I would have to reinstall XP. Everytime I had to do this, I would loose what I had on my computer. At the time I barely knew anything about computers, but after dealing with Dell about my laptop I have learned more than I ever thought I would.

After about a year of constantly calling Dell about this error, they finally put a new motherboard into the system. For a few months the laptop was fine, then keys would randomly quit working, I called and they would set it up for the laptop to go to depo to get rekeyed. I've also had trouble with keys falling off also, I am the only one who uses this laptop and I don't type hard at all, I could barely touch the keys (when they were working mind you) and it would be easy to type.

The last time I had the key problem was in June of 2003, then about a week and a half ago random keys quit working again. I called tech support( was in shock to get someone in the usa) and he walked me through some things to check the laptop and he concluded it needed to be sent to depot to be rekeyed once again. Each time this laptop has gone in concerning the keys they have always put a new system board in too.

When I sent the laptop in, the laptop was running fine except for the key problem, and the hindges needed to be tightened on the laptop.

When I got the laptop back, which it came back a day and a half after Airborne picked it up. I plugged it in and expected to be able to use it. I was wrong to have that expectation, and the problems I am having now is what lead me to write this really long post here. The laptop froze after being on it for about 20 min, I mean totally froze; holding down the power button for over a minute wouldn't even make the thing turn off. I would have to remove the battery and unplug the adapter to get the thing off. After having this happen it made me examine the puter to see if anything else wasn't as before I sent it in. I'll try to describe this the best way I can, the right side of the screen the back part holding the screen in is almost broken; and also on the right side it looks as if the screen is pushed back some. The hindges had not been tightened either. So I called back tech support, anc described all of the above; and so Airborne came and got it later the same day that it had been returned to me earlier. I just got it back again a couple of days ago, and as soon as I got on the laptop when I got it back it was still doing the freezeing thing. And neither the screen or the plastic part on the right had been fixed. Also after the first time the laptop came back, the box looked like it had gotten wet and been through world war 3. Which leads me to my questions.

Over the past couple of days I have been trying to backup my harddrive in between when the laptop would freeze. I was unable to get this done. I got out the diagnostics CD and tried to run that. and it froze during that also. After unplugging the adapter and removing the battery to get it off, and after about 15 min; I tried plugging it back in again. The laptop would make this sound as if it was trying to come on but just couldn't, and the only light that would light up was the one saying it was plugged in with the adapter. All I had sent this laptop off for was because some of the keys were not working and the hindges needed to be tightened. I never imagined all this would 20 min after getting it back from depot.

Could this be a Windows XP problem?

Could this be from the system being dropped in shipment or something else?

Has anybody else had this happen or heard of this happening?

This Could possibly be a Windows XP problem.

This could also be a possibility since you say the box looks like its gone thru all sorts of hell.

I have heard of similar software issues related to this and in most cases the person would just feel a reformat was definetly in order but it sounds like your not willing to do this.

Might I suggets this time you call Customer Care and make a complaint regarding your system which has gone thru all these repairs and still hasnt come back in working order and I urge you to make a huge deal out of this and start nit pickign about how terrible the tech support was and how a customer could be treated like this.

Right after demand your system be restored to working order as soon as possible

I called Tech Support after I posted, and luckily got the nicest lady in Idaho who listened to me and was exremely helpful. It's not that I wasn't up to reformating, I was going to do that; but when I turned on the laptop so I could open the DVD tray to put the CD in it that contained Windows XP from Dell the computer completely died. Now it won't turn on at all what so ever. I told the lady I spoke to this. After putting me on hold for a couple of minutes, she came back and told me they were going to replace the Processor, Motherboard, Memory, Hindge Cover Assembly, and the Bessel or Bezzel (sp). I'm hoping all this will work.

Man this sounds like a real nightmare.
I my place I would have gone nuts and yelled at them and no offense but I would really ask for a replacement system and not to exchange all this parts again cause the laptop isn't getting better by constantly getting taken apart. I speak from personal experience there with my old i8200.
I also had such problems, well not this severe but constant problems, with my i8200 and DELL replaced it with a i8600 cause the i8200 and the i8500 isnt built anymore so I was pretty happy about this.
Maybe if you negotiate a bit and ask nicely you will get the same deal.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah at this point a refurbed system of equal specs should be issued since the problem is beyond reapirable part by part basis

Do you think I could reach somebody this weekend, or wait till monday to call about just replacing my laptop? Tell them how many times it has been sent in for repair, only to come back in only worse shape than it went to them in. And all the stuff they would be replacing on this thing, they would be better off just issuing a refurbished one with equal specs. I have read your replies, and it got me to thinking about how stupid it sounded to replace the Processor, Motherboard, Memory, Hindge Cover Assembly, and the Bessel or Bezzel (sp).

I am so tried of having trouble with this thing; and loosing things I have stored on the laptop. I know it's just a computer, but having so much trouble with it, and nothing ever seems to really fix it; is getting to be so stressful along with other things going on. It's sad to pay for extended warranties, so if things break they'll be covered and get repaired or if you need tech support you have some place to call. Only to reach people who don't understand what your saying, trying to explain what's wrong; and they act as if they haven't heard a thing you have said. Being put on hold every 5 min and sometimes never coming back or the call getting disconnected and having to call back to go through the same thing again.and most of the time the only solution they could come up with was reformating. Then sending it in for repair, and it they either do nothing to it, or it comes back in worse shape.

Thank you for your help, and also agreeing with the point that's it's unreasonable and stupid to replace just about the entrie laptop at this point of the game; and to just replace it. I thought the same, but I guess I just needed to have a little reassurance asking for a replacement laptop wasn't that far of a leap to make.

I understand your pain and suffering. Im not sure how you are with being disgruntled but you have to demand it and since dell keeps track of all repairs this is clearly going to show on a memo and get flagged as a user who clearly needs a system replacement or hes gonna start causing problems somehow.. someway

there was a person on these forums taht posted how he had an earlier model like an 8200 and complained to the point they gave him an 8600/8500. persistance is key imo here.

Ok I called Dell and explained to them that I'm not interested in sending this laptop in to have all the stuff I mentioned in one of my posts above replaced. I told them all the times I've had to send it in, all the motherboards it's gone through, how it's not getting any better by getting taking apart again and again, and and how it's come back worse after being sent to them for repair. The guy told me the previous person did all that they were supposed to, as a 2nd level tech is what I think he said; and then he tried to say if replacing all the things I've mentioned didn't resolve the problems I've had with the laptop; then replacing the laptop "could possibly" be the next step. That my laptop being completely dead now could possibly be fixed by a single component.

I demanded to talk to a supervisor, and he told me there wasn't one I could talk to then; and that they were booked and the soonest an appt. could be made for one to get back to me would be Wednesday. Is this how things like this usually go? Also, is it true that you have to book at time for a Supervisor to call you back; and one can't be transfered a Supervisor right then? Is there something I could do to get one on the phone when I call them, instead of having to wait for one to supposedly call me back? I barely believe anything they say, after all I have had to go through with them concerning this laptop, catching people in lies and etc.; I will never buy another dell and don't think I'll be recommending them to anyone.

<---- What I am feeling like now, < --- What I'd like to do to the people at Dell.

XP or Laptop Problem *Update*

I got my replacement laptop yesterday. It's a 5150.

Specs.
15 Inch XGA Screen
Mobile Pentium 4 2.66 ghz
30 GB HD
256 MB DDR Ram
32MB DDR NVIDIA GeForceā„¢ FX Go5200 AGP 4x Graphics
24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
128MB Dell USB Memory Key

It's better than the previous one I had, which was only P3 1 ghz, 20 GB HD, with no graphics card used the Intel Color Control or something like that, DVD, and it came with 128 MB of Ram. I had upgraded to 384 MB though. The only thing I really miss from the old one is how it had buttons on the keyboard area to control the volume and the DVD functions; and the keyboard was so much more comfortable and easier to type on. With the new one I had to take the Mcafree off as soon as I turned it on, that and norton I have never liked and they've always slowed down any puter I've used them on. Couldn't believe how much faster this laptop got after removing it though.

Thanks to all who helped me with this situation!

Also they told me the replacement wouldn't have an additonal warranty on it, that it would just be the remainder of the original laptop's warranty. Is this how it usually goes? And if you know, could I purchase an additional warranty on this one after the old one expires?
