Anyone ever use Dell Out of Warranty Repair?

Thread Starter
I have a broken DC plug on the back of my 9300 so I am unable to get power to the motherboard. I went to my local repair guy to see if I could get a new plug solderd in but he recommended I go to Dell since that doesn't always work (I'm not sure if my local guy was just bad at repairs or if it really is a PITA repair). Anyway Dell said they would repair the problem for $198 and if they couldn't I would get a new system for $498. Has anyone ever used this service? I have a feeling I'm in the cannot repair catagory but I wanted to know what I'm getting back for 500 bucks. Will this really be a new 1720? And then what will the processor and grafics card be? I have a go 6600 which is faster then all the cards on the 1720 except the 8600 GT. I'd be all for it if I got the 8600 card but not so sure if I'm looking at a base 1720 w/ intel media accelarator.

just a quick question why would you get the media accelerator?
You do realize that if you get that then you cannot upgrade to a better graphics card at a later time or manually put your own one in. The motherboard is different with a media accelerator FYI

he knows it's bad to get the gma... he's wondering if it's possible that's what dell will give him, not that he'd choose it.

As for the OP's question... I have no idea what they do for that kind of service...

Hello,

This is Richard from the Dell Online Community Outreach group. If the power adapter plug-in has become dismounted from the motherboard, then most likely the board will be replaced. It is very rare that we would try to repair a damaged motherboard.

I am unsure of the repair option that was presented to you. Normally the fees include labor and parts. I have not heard of an offer that includes us not being able to fix the computer. Everything is fixable, you just replace the part.

If they say they can't fix due to part depletion you might get some negotiating ground after you got that quote?

It is likely that they will have the parts. My 5150 took a major dump both video and motherboard a few months after Dell re-initiated the warranty for that model. They replaced the LCD and motherboard (no charge in my case) though the computer was over three years old.

At the price you are mentioning, I doubt it would contain either of the Nvidia cards.

there are also companies that specialize in fixing these types of simple motherboard problems. many times they simply unsolder the power connector and solder another one on... or resisters or capacitors that went wrong.

I just did a quick ebay search and came up with this link... no personal experience, but it's one (probably much cheaper) solution that you can try.
