New TV + Toshiba HD A3 + HD-DVD vs. DVD

Now, I know all you out there will be thrilled by my first pic.

Also, temporary list of DVD's to be tested are

-Black Hawk Down
-Saving Private Ryan
-Band of Brothers

HD-DVD's

-Planet Earth
-Shooter (backorder)

So, what the plan is here is to first give a little review of the TV itself, Toshiba HD-A3 and finally, go over the comparison of HD DVD's vs. DVD's upconverted to 1080i (sorry, damn A3 doesn't upconvert to 1080p like a good boy).

As of right now, I only have one part of this process in hand which is to be honest the most amazing part anyway.

Expected arrival of items

Sharp 1080p 32" LC32D62U = 11/30/07 (maybe a day or 2 before depending on how fast DHL moves

Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player = 11/27/07 (yes, that's tomorrow folks!)

DVD's + HD-DVD's = 11/28/07 to 12/05/07 (with exclusion of Shooter)

Voila, my HDMI to DVI cable to hook it up to my PC

Just received my Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player today

The remote I must say feels a tad flimsy. Even with batteries it feels really plastic'y but it seems almost all of them are like that now. The player itself feels pretty light which is nice, easy to move around and that makes it pretty convenient. It's only about 2" tall so that it can fit basically anywhere and all of the features are right on the front so that access is pretty easy. One down side is that in the past all of my VHS/DVD players came with at least some basic cables however this one came with nothing other than a power cable. The current free 300 and Bourne Identity offer is pretty nice, saves me spending an extra $30 I haven't been able to try it out because I don't have the Aquos yet, I'm hoping for it to come Thursday although I don't know where it is right now...DHL is being a moron with updating my package location.

So, if you'd like me to include anything that I haven't, please speak up. After a couple months I'll get some more HD-DVD's to try out because of Toshiba's free HD-DVD offer.

You will love it when you get a HD TV hooked up with the HD-A3, I have it as well and already bought about 15 new HD-DVDs of my Fav movies

Ahh the anticipation is insane haha

Well I do get the HD-A3 today, however that's pretty useless without the new HDTV

The TV just today at 1am left from Plano Texas (about 25 hours direct travel) so I'd say I should get it maybe a day early on Thursday. And if absolutely lucky then wednesday, but that would mean the whole truck was just devoted to coming to NYC which is hard to believe since it's coming from Texas

Jeez that's nice. Although I think 52" would be a little too much for a monitor and of course unless I got a D64 I'd be a little scared of banding issues prone to 40"+ inch LCD's

Hey!! I have been looking for something like this online. If possible I would like to see some Pictures of regular DVD upconverting with your HD-A3 along side pictures or screenshots of HD-DVD. I bought a HD-A2 and it is a gift. I would like to know how good it is at upconverting from standerd dvd to 1080i/p. I can not seem to find any pictures online of what the upconverting picture looks like compared to regular dvd and compared to HD-DVD. If you did this I am sure you would get a lot of hits. Nice setup! I really hope everything works out great for you! GREAT POST!!

Can do! Probably by this friday I'll be able able to get shots of the comparison for you, granted my DVD's get here. I can't compare the SAME DVD to HD-DVD but I think you'll be able to get the idea from say 300 in HD vs. saving private ryan or something.

Glad you're enjoying

Only thing I'm semi-unhappy with is that it only upconverts to 1080i rather than 1080p

Cool!! Yeah that would be great!! I just want to get a little taste of what is to come =Þ. Yeah, Luckily there is not to much of a difference between 1080i and 1080p to get to flustered about. I have a 1080i Hitachi 46in. I have my PC hooked up to it now. AND wow .. CRYSIS the game looks that much better!! Can't wait to see some pics!!

That's actually really cool to hear seeing as the main purpose of this purchase was just for a much larger and more spacey monitor.

I do wish DHL would update my TV's status or get it moving though, as it's been listed as passing through a Waco Texas Factory for 2 days now and I'm all the way up in NY

You are gonna enjoy THIS so much!! Me=Jealous!! I heard Planet Earth is good on HD DVD if you enjoy Geography/Animal stuff!! I have a superbit dvd. And it plays a lot clearer on my pc than my other DVDS. SO I am thinking it will play even better with the HDDVD player. DO you know what superbit is? I have a few movies with superbit. Like a better transfer rate making it clearer or something. But you can tell the difference. I have Snatch and it looks beautiful on my PC. Other dvd's even transformers does not look as good and clear as it. If you have one test it out. I am sure I will be shocked when i do!

Hmm I do not actually know what superbit is. Care to let me know more about it?

SuperBit Deluxe

Ok here is what i know.
Superbit
Superbit is a brand of premium DVD-Video versions of motion pictures from Columbia TriStar Home Video, a division of Sony. Superbit DVDs aim to improve picture quality over a standard DVD edition of a feature by increasing the bit rate of the encoded video. Audio quality is also improved by the mandatory inclusion of both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround audio tracks.
Superbit movie files are encoded at a bit rate that is, according to Sony, approximately twice as high (6-7 Mbps) as that of standard DVDs, which helps minimize artifacts caused by video compression and improve detail. To maximize space for the main feature, static menus are used and commentary tracks are removed.

Discontinuation
In January 2007, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment discontinued its Superbit line in order to promote its Blu-ray Disc format.

So pretty much they were the best thing until bluray and HD-DVD came along....news for me.. They were the same price as regular DVD's and the quality is amazingly great on a regular DVD player.

Also, How do I add stats about my computer at the bottom like you and the others. And here is what it looks like!

SO yeah!! They dont make them anymore but I guess they were the best thing around until blu-ray and HD-DVD! So i learned something new too! All you loose is Commentary tracks and static menus. But some come with extra disks for features.

Here are some screenshots I took. The upload made them jaggedy but you get the point.

I just took a screenshot from my PC. I wish i had a comparison, but you get the idea. Clearer pic than DVD.

Ahh I see, that's good to know actually since I didn't know about such a thing existing previous to the HD versions. Must say it's a good idea though, get some upgrades without having to pay extra money

As for the computer specs below each of your posts, if your backdrop on notebook forums is really black or very white, then when you get on the home page, near the top it should have a link for private messages, click on that. Then on the left hand side, under "Settings and Options" click "edit signature". And then you're home free

If you have an old more gray background then near the top and to the left, you'll find "user CP" click that, then proceed to click edit signature and you're done.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Always enjoy helping people out around here :]

Well, I hate to say that it's not in Texas any longer, however got to Ohio, shipped out 24 hours ago (should've taken 10 to get here) and it still isn't in the same state. God why would anybody ever choose DHL.

Dumb idiots aren't even smart enough to update the estimated delivery date after it's not here and it's already 2:40pm. Well, gonna just complain to Dell about DHL's terrible job and yell at DHL.

Got the TV in my hands today! Looks beautiful

I haven't gotten time to take pictures yet but I did just watch a bit of band of brothers (DVD) and compared it to 300 (HD-DVD) and to be honest I'm not really all that impressed by HD-DVD. It definitely has it's advantages as I'm sure I'll see when I watch some planet earth, however with most plot movies I would say the difference is not worth the extra $10 a disc

Hopefully I'll get some pictures up of the TV in general tonight for you guys and my setup. Probably not any HD-DVD comparison shots yet though. Hang in there
post #19 of 33
I wouldn't expect you to notice a huge difference in the HD-DVD disks on a 32" display. Also depends how close you sit. And, if your HD-DVD player/TV combination does a good job upconverting regular DVDs ... that's another reason they will look good and you will see less of a difference. Sounds like you can't lose, if DVDs look great ... you'll be all ready for that next big screen with your HD-DVD player.
