New System Build - Suggestions - Page 2

I'm buying the asus maximus soon for my upcoming build. I've been reading that it's raid controller sucks. Remember the P5E3 is for DDR3 the maximus is DDR2 only.

I'd look up the raid functions of both first.

Well, maybe I'll just stick with 3 drives - that is, after reading about the poor raid controllers...

So - any recommendations for a high perf 250GB drive?

Got the drives...
You got the drives, so my post is too late. Would have highly recommended one of the 750GB Hard Drives ... even at 7200 RPM, they are quite fast...

But, I realize this doesn't leave much option for back-up if you don't want to buy another one.

Good luck with your build!

I ended up getting WD drives. One SE16 320 for games and a single Samsung F1 750 for storage. I already have an external for backup.

I know both are huge, but that leaves room to grow...alot of room.

Good deal. I think you'll be happy with that config.

Are you getting the Maximus Formula (DDR2) or Maximus Extreme (DDR3)?

I'd like to get the Extreme version myself, but the price of DDR3 is still cost prohibitive. The cheapest 2GB kit I found was around $360 (OCZ).

Also, what memory are you considering, that is, if you're looking at the Formula board?

I'm looking at the Formula and Crucial Ballistix Tracers PC2-8500 2gb..maybe 4.

Only 115 dollars for 2GB.

I know - but the price/GB is much higher just for saying it's 1TB. 750 is still HUGE. My current storage drive is only 250GB w/only 87GB used.

Good deal on the mem.

Doing dual boot or single OS?
Most likely I'm going to do a dual. XP, vista ultimate 64, maybe linux.

Did you check out my Brilliant Worklog?

I need to update some things, but I'm getting lazy.

Very Nice - our specs will be almost identical - with the exception of your $$$$$$$$ H20 setup!!

I really like the Stacker case...almost bought one myself until I checked the dimensions...I am limited because mine will be in a armoire. The Cosmos is, without a doubt, my favorite...
My P182 should be here next week. It's a nice case as well, just a bit smaller than the Stacker. The P182 upper drive bay will have to come out to get a GTX or Ultra to fit.

I am 95% sure I'll get the Formula - 100% sure on the Q9450 (if I can wait that long).

Looks good, but hope you don't have to wait for the new video cards to come out to get this put together. Do you have a CPU and GPU to use for now, then upgrade when the new ones are out?
It looks good to me, all good parts.

I do hope you don't run into vista issues because I know I got into some and it was a real pain in the ass to have to then go out and spend another $100 to fix the issue.

I don't have either one! Still using my current 'used to be a screaming rig' X850XT AGP with a P4NW 3.2 @3.6. Selling to my brother in January (I hope)...

So - I will have to sit and wait in anticipation.

I have been worrying myself SICK about Vista issues.

From what I understand - all internal OS issues are resolved (Sp1 RC1). I do not have many 3rd party software programs...and the ones I have are so old I'll buy new ones anyway...
Yeah you shouldn't have Vista collapsing on itself, it's more so problematic when it comes to applications on the system and certain drivers

Does anyone here have experience with the X38 ASUS Maximus Formula board? Reviews seem to be glowing.....
