GBrilliantQ. You do know that you are paying for the name rite? 'Maximus Assimus'...who said that?

and its a good name. it doesn't mean I'm paying 268 dollars for onboard sound either.

I personally believe that it's a sound investment...

Posted updates to initial post.

Changed drive configuration (purchased), memory selection (not purchased).

Interested in seeing how the 'new' 8800s BM before I pick up a video card.

Also, new mobos out this month. ASUS Striker II, along with several other 780i, and X38 variants - hopefully all with a decently functioning BIOS.

I started assembling my system last night. The boxes started piling up.

I swapped out the included ANTEC fans with 4 Scythe S-FLEX series fans - 2 x SFF21F (63.7 CFM) for intake and 2 x SFF21E (49.0 CFM) for exhaust. A bit of overkill for exhaust, but I got a good deal on the Es. I should be able to control the fans nicely...I do not want to create a vaccuum.

I also installed the optical and front sound controller in the drive bays as well as power supply. Hard drives will be later this week.

So far, I am very impressed with the Antec P182 case. Very solid with nice features. Antec has a video promo of the P182 on their site here: http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=81820

Still undecided on motherboard and video card. I want to see if prices will drop any later this month.

Buck47,

Be carefull if you want a 8800 gtx/ ultra in that case b/c the upper hdd tray makes it almost impossible to plug in your hard drives.

I've read that on many sites - mainly Silent PC.

I have already removed the upper HD cage as I will not need it. The lower HD cage is ample.

I've already installed a fan where the upper cage was - leaving ample room for what ever card I end up with.

I appreciate the input.

Thanks. I've done some extensive research on not only these modules, but all other 1150/9200+ versions as well.

I ended up with OCZ for several reasons. 1) I used OCZ in my past 2 system builds; 2) OCZ Support is 2nd to none; 3) These modules are the best at their rated speeds.

I will note that they do not do well below rated timings. At rated timings, they fly.

On the contrary. I have listened carefully, and researched extensively. The only advice I didn't take was RAID 0 - I was completely hell bent on RAIDing. I decided against it due to the negligible gains RAID 0 offers.

The intent of the thread is all in the title. That also includes getting members to share information about their rigs and experiences. And I thank everyone for their replies - esp Duke and GBQ.

Whether I decide to choose or not to choose a particular suggestion or component is completely up to me...it's my money.

With that - Why the disdainful attitude?

Glad to be here. I joined last year after picking up my Dell. This is without a doubt the most comprehensive notebook support site around - and I've learned quite a bit.

As far as my build goes, I will not have any updates for a while. I have everything except cpu, mobo, and vid. I guess my next purchase will be mobo, but am waiting for new mobo releases later this month.

I would like a cheap copy of MS Office 07 for this build - anyone have recs on where to buy?

Nvidia is 'supposed' to announce the new nForce chipsets (750,780,790) on Monday, 17 Dec.

We'll have to see how the mobo's work out.

Right now:
750i = DDR2 dual sli
780i = DDR2 tri sli
790i = DDR3 tri sli

Tri sli is a bit much, don't you think?
post #58 of 61
definitely. Not willing to spend $1800 on a single system, let alone GPU's
post #59 of 61
Huh?

Ohh, three VGAs! I get it...nm, ya' cheap bastid.

Buck47, have you tried the free OpenOffice.org. You may find you don't need to spend a penny on Office.

Office for a gaming rig, I suppose...

I wouldn't buy office. I'm happy with notepad.
