Turbo Mode and Linksys WRT54GS

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm trying to work out why when I hover over the G-EzLink utility in the task bar it indicates only 54Mbps, even though this router has "speedbooster" and is capable of 108Mbps. In fact, on my other laptop, the wlan card (linksys with speedbooster) shows 125Mbps when hovering. On that machine I was only able to get those speeds with the Linksys equivalent utility uninstalled, per linkys' instruction. I tried removing the Gigabyte WLAN utility to parallel that, and just use the WLAN capabilities in Win XP (provided by new WPA patch for XP), but then it wouldn't work at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

Speedbooster is Broadcom proprietary technology. Just as Turbo-G is Atheros' own protocol.

You have to have a router that uses the Atheros functionality - like the GigaByte.

Until all these vendors come up with a single standard, this is what we have to deal with (kind of like when 56k modems first came out).

Caution about the GigaByte router. The transmitter appears to be a bit underpowered. You might want to add a "gain" antenna to the unit to have satisfactory results. Look here:

or go the the mainpage and see other options.

Different standards/makers do not work together in the Turbo mode.

Get the Netgear 108 Turbo router. It is supposed to have great range according to www.tomshardware.com I already bought one in anticipation of getting my computer.... when I get it I will let everyone know how the range is.

The linksys router you have is not compatible with 108 turbo routers...which is why it does not have the 108 turbo logo, and why you only see 54mbs.

I would be interested how you like the Netgear router since I am looking for a wireless router now to go with my new 8790.

I have the router, but still have not gotten my 8790 yet.... so I cannot comment on how well it works with the laptop. But I think there will be no issues. I will let everyone know when I get my computer. I do have another desktop computer with a PCI turbo card, and the connection is really fast, stable and is far from the router... so it is great so far!

Are there any bridges that work with this router? I have an X-Box I would like to hook up wirelessly. I suppose any 802.11b one would do since speed is not an issue.
