boot coded d510 latitude

Any ideas on where to find boot code info for a latitude D510? Did not find what I needed on the Dell site. The PC powers on, all leds flash, then one led flashes 9 times, then the whole thing powers off.

Recently upgraded RAM and installed new HDD. No probs on first boot, XP Pro installed, configured with multi users, this all happened about a week ago. Suddenly PC will not power up, LCD display stays dark.

Thanks for any info or suggestions.

which LED flashes?

It is the middle led of the three near the power button. The icon is the Caps Lock icon.

Thanks for any info.

According to Dell's service manual your laptop needs a new motherboard. The Caps lock flashing denotes a motherboard failure. Sorry it's not more specific than that.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Thanks for the info.

I found some other info on the web that suggests the problem lies with the ram sockets. Some have had success simply reseating RAM with extra care. Others have wedged a piece of plastic or rubber between the RAM cards and the cover plate.

I tried reseating my SODIMMs and for the moment the box is working. Based on anecdotal evidence, I don't have a ton of confidence that it will stay working but we will see.

Thanks again Mr. Evil.
