Just broke laptop screen, how to open programs in 2nd monitor?

Thread Starter
So my gf just dropped my laptop and cracked the screen, the screen is now unusable. I have a 2nd monitor, a Dell, and have managed to get the main toolbar to show on this monitor, but all of the programs open off screen on the laptop monitor. Is there a way to force the programs to open on the 2nd monitor so I can get to the cpanel and change the settings?

What do you mean? YOu can't get into control panel or you don't know how to set that monitor as 1st? ("mirror image", which is good for you)

I'm thinking it's the first alternative, so here is how I did once:

On the second monitor, right click and select properties. The video properties will open on the 1st screen, where you can't look at it (and thus can't move into sight). On that moment, press ALT + SPACEBAR, then ENTER. That will make your mouse disappear, because actually it goes into the title bar o the hidden window (video prop.). Press and hold the mouse button, and then bring the video properties windows into sight.

THat's how I do when that happens to me (1st screen goes blank and I have only the 2nd).

//edit: do you know what s*cks? when it happens on the login screen...

in this situation, I don't understand why you couldn't fn-crt/lcd to switch the output to external instead of dealing with primary/secondary monitors or even mirror...

Haha! Or you can do that! (you can clearly see that my experience with multiple monitors is nil, null).

I will try that next time I need to use the TV, lol.

I have a question..... I recently dropped my Acer inspire 4720z and screen is broken, I've hooked up a external monitor but I can't get it to pop on after the boot screen goes off, I've tried safe mode but windows won't load that way so does anyone know of how I can play my laptop Thur a monitor without being able to change settings on laptop screen first??? If so email an answer chefbrown07@gmail.com Thank you

Have you tried the FN key combination to switch between the LCD and the external monitor?

cheers ...

Yes I push fn and f4 @ start but no switch and it's frustrating

Check the monitor cable, check the port. Any message from the monitor itself? Like signal coming in

cheers ...

Yes when it's booting it comes on but when it goes to load windows the monitor goes off and stays off, the fn and f4 do nothing, can't change in BIOS and Acer want $99 to tell me the 5 min job! :'(

Just for kick, can you put in an installation disk of some sort and see if you can access the external monitor?

cheers ...

I also have a laptop with broken screen & altho the Fn combination keys are high-lighted in blue as well as the monitor key they don't work as a combination (atleast my laptop) I use the monitor key alone to toggle to external monitor.
