Ordering Turbo Memory For Inspiron 1520/Vostro 1500...

I noticed the recent configurations of the Inspiron 1520 allow 1GB of Intel Turbo Memory to be added... I was wondering if there was any way for current Inspiron 1520/1500 Vostro owners to order just the Turbo Memory module itself from Dell Parts so we can install it ourselves?

You don't even have to order from Dell.

Look for one on Ebay, Amazon, or here : http://www.excaliberpc.com/Intel_1GB...id-580907.html

I got mine from excal because of free shipping via fedex. You can find better deals out there though.

Wait so I can get the Turbo Memory module ANYWHERE?!!
Will it be guaranteed to work on my Vostro 1500? Also I faintly remember reading my laptop manual and find there is a vacant slot just for the Turbo Memory module underneath the Vostro 1500 - is that true?

BTW - is Intel coming out with 2GB or higher Turbo Memory? 1GB seems kind of puny...

Yes they are all same module, and no, 1GB is only one out now.

You will not see significant improvement, but it will speed up boot time few seconds, and other applications.

It is worth the upgrade since it's fairly cheap.

Funny you should say that as I currently have 4GB of memory on my Vista x86... I am wondering if I will see any improvement at ALL with this additional module...

I highly doubt you will see any improvement at all all with a 4GB system.

Systems with less than 1GB will have a noticable improvement. Anything above 2GBs will be marginal at best, and at 4GB maybe only boot time improvment seen right off, and after that who knows. It does not mean it will not do you any good, just that it takes time for the system to learn your software usage etc. And it really is only for Vista anyway.

If you open the bottom of a Vostro 1500 you will notice 3 slots, one for WPAN (Bluetooth card) one for WWAN (Mobile boradband 3G etc), and WLAN (Wifi) but the WPAN and WWAN also have a designation of FCM which I believe is FLASH CARD MEMORY for the turbo cards. Should be able to get two in there but I have not seen anything to point to it.

Actually, the WPAN slot on the Vostro is NOT for the Bluetooth card. The Bluetooth card is underneath the keyboard bezel. I beleive it's actually for a future Wireless USB card...whenever that is going to hit the market. The turbo memory card should work in that slot just fine since it's a standard Mini PCIe slot. This way you can have turbo memory, and WLAN, and WWAN.

I purchased my Turbo Memory module off www.pricegrabber.com from one of their sellers. It was only about $35.00 shipped. I had to do a search by the part number to locate it. Here's the link. I bought it from NextWareHouse.com and it showed up pretty quickly.

I'm running 2 GB of RAM right now. It probably made some difference, though it hasn't been really noticeable. Aside from adding the Turbo Memory I've done my own OS tweaks from researching. That probably helped the efficiency more than anything. I use TweakVI from www.totalidea.com, X-Setup Pro, and Tweak UAC. The other thing I did was pay a visit to Black Viper's web site and change up my services that I did not need running in the background.

I pretty satisfied with the performance of my 1520 now. Since I have a little change burning a hole in my pocket, I might put some extra RAM to make 4 GB total. It will probably won't make a huge difference, but RAM has dropped in price to make it fairly afforable.

I know the slot is not for the specific bluetooth that comes equipped for this vostro as its normally under the lcd. The WPAN though is "Wireless Personal Area Network", which usually is meant for bluetooth connections. You can get PCIe mini bluetooth cards that will work in that slot. I do not however think it is designed for standard PCIe mini cards in general (Not that slot anyway) because of the antenna issues. I would not go randomly throwing any card in that slot since it does not specifically show the appropriate designation. (I know it may be ok, but if it does not say FCM on the slot, I would not throw just any mini PCIe flash memory card in there, in case the voltage is different.) The two slots that are clearly marked though should be ok. I still have not been able to find any documentation that specifically says what to throw in the WPAN other than bluetooth.
