ATI Actually Competing with NVidia Now?

In the mid-level enthuiast range - these cards offer the most value.

The 3870, at OEM stock clocks, is almost as fast as the 8800GT Superclocked card, consumes 100watts less power at full load, and costs $70-$100 less (as of 12/01/07 - but prices have crept up a bit since initial release). Also have HD and dx10.1 support.

I'm unable to find any OC BMs on either card yet.

The same reviews are echoed all over the net...

But they still do not have anything to compete with GTX/Ultra.

yea, 3870 looks like a nice card...But once the new GTS and 9000 series are release ATI will be pushed back in the dark ages unfortunetly.

I've always wanted to try ATI, but thye've never had anything with enough current power.

2 3870's vs. 8800GT. OC'd them also.

Ehhh, it did alright on that review...The 8800GT XXX edition did very well, but who knows how much that puppy is going for.

So one against the cheaper 256mb 8800GT then .

Hopefully ATI's new offerings will bring Nvidia's card down in price. They have slowly went higher and higher.. People keep buying them up though.

I will also when the new 9000 cards hit the market.

I honestly wish ATI would come out with something that was just mind blowing for 500-600 that pawns the 8800 Ultra, like I said i've always wanted to try ATI brand, but ever since the ti-4600 and 9800 Pro, they haven't offered anything close in performance.

in response to the thread title it sounds like "barely"

Exactly! Look at the number of 3870 cards Newegg has already sold. I hope this has an impact on the new 8800GT prices - which will most likely be the card I get. 9900-series will not be out until Feb. I don't know if I can wait that long...

That was the intent-but they are competing.

Ati didn't even have a booth at Quakecon this year. Poor.

Poor indeed.

With AMD's recent moves - they appear to be heading in their own direction, and who knows where that is...
Well AMD is pretty much suicidal at this point. Well, I guess not suicidal but just fighting a losing battle

I used to be a Big ATI fan, but they been so far behind now for years. and the 8800GT blows the ATi card out of the water, and price is pretty much the same if you hunt around for them.

I am still ticked off at AMD for dropping the Quad core in Sockt F

Thinking I am going to change to intel which would be my first since the early 486 CPU lol ( I have been AMD since the dx4-100 CPU)

From what I understand, they are (AMD) putting all of their eggs in one basket (Spider platform). Kinda sounds like the AMD version of a Mac.

I was also an AMD customer for a good number of years. AMD, by far, offered the best value/bang-for-the-buck.

3800 series still better bang for the buck based on availability and price point and performance. However you want to skin your cat you're welcome to it.

dont see the big deal honestly

all of those benchmarks both amd and nvidia had FPS that were definatly playable and not going to hurt the eyes while playing

so you can get amd and still play the same games, and you can get nvidia and still play the same games, at the same res's shown in the benchmarks

and the thread title is just asking for flame wars

ati actually compeating with nvidia? umm wut? try like, for a loooooooong time ATI was king, drivers were stable, drivers were great, video cards out preformed, past 2-3 years they have just been trying to work on better stuff

just because 2 generations ati lost in best effin video card ever for the most extreme must have eleventybillion fps gamer, doesnt mean they are not making money, that they are not good video cards, they are in the game, they will continue to be in the game

keep in mind, when there is no one to compete with, you get crap, you get a dell, foxconn hynixx ohhhhhh joy!

Well - that was certianly not the intent of the thread starter - ME.

The intent was to simply inform of ATI's competitive re-emergence in the midrange market.

Quite the contrary. To finally have competition in a market where, for 3-4 years, one corporate entity has reaped (sounds like raped, doesn't it?) the benefits of having the full spectrum of that particular market cornered is a big deal indeed.

Disappointment is widespread across the PC community with AMD's financial and technological moves. Everyone who has either built or purchased a PC over the past few years has, whether they know it or not, felt the repercussions.

I am neither fanboy or flamer - I'm too old for that. I do, however, feel compelled to inform fellow enthuiasts of emerging technologies or market information - when it's appropriate.

AMD-ATI has a good video card. It's really quite that simple.

If the title of this thread offends, I do apologize. Moderators, feel free to change it to "ATI's New Graphics Cards".

The only thing ATI really had for them was 3Dmark, their in game performance wasn't up to par with nvidia. I can't remember when ATI was ahead. ATI was always cheaper though, but that was about it.
