OK, I will keep it simple:

If you were given a choice to select a given 120GB HDD (everything equal), which would you choose:

- Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, WD or Seagate?

Thanks!

WD is basicly the big dog for laptop drives, Hitachi is good too tho

Why would they be talking about laptop drives? or are you just saying that you know WD is big in laptops, so you vote for it for a desktop?

I voted seagate, they seem to be pretty reputable and my only WD drive I bought was screwed.

Well the title of the thread is "HDD replaces HDD that goes into enclosure?". So I'm guessin secondary to put in an enclosure . If that's the case I have some WD passports with the 2.5 5400rpm drives and they have been great. No heat/noise that I can tell and they are nice and small. Also an old Hitachi in an aftermarket enclosure, same luck with it as the WD. If that's what you mean by the thread anywho. Maybe I read it wrong .

Based on my personal experiences, I'd go with the Hitachi. Or, if you can find a Western Digital for a bit less, go with that. But, again, based on my experiences, both personal and professional, I recommend:

1. Hitachi
2. Western Digital

I've had lots of problems with Seagate, and Toshiba drives are iffy at best. Rarely see Samsung drives, so can't really give an accurate recommendation on that. But like I said, Hitachi or WD. That's the way to go.

I have an 250GB Hitachi and it runs very loud. Clicks all the time. Hitachi drives are very reliable but you pay for it in noise. I've had terrible experience with WD. Three have died on me in my lifetime. After speaking to a support rep at a very large hard drive recovery business, he claimed the two most reliable HDs you can buy:

1. Fujitsu
2. Hitachi

the two worst,

1. WD.
2. Maxtor.

Fujitsu? Reliable? My ass. Had one in my i9300. It was replace 4 times, by another damn Fujitsu drive.

As far as WD, looks like its more hit-and-miss with them too. I've personally never had a problem with them, but some do, so its up to you.

One thing's clear tho, seems Hitachi is the winner here. lol

Duke- i think some HD's are just a hit and miss. You may get one that performs flawlessly or one that gives you trouble.

I think its just luck of the draw, but of course some brands are more reputable than others.

Ive had my 250GB WD for about a year and a half and it still runs like new.

If everything were equal. you wouldn't have to ask the question, just get the lowest price with the longest warranty. Oh wait, that makes them un-equal...

well of course some vendor hard drives will do that. my point was the hd recovery company saw more issues with WD then they did any other hard drive...

One thing to check is the external you are buying matches the kind you have in the notebook.

Ie, SATA or PATA...

WD still has the gaming market, and the gaming market is growing still, the raptors are still selling big time, and nothing can compare as of yet

Ahh really? Were they able to recover the info for you? Did the tech person say specifically what the issue was?
