For the love of god, how do you make linux do surround sound out of my notebook? I can somewhat get my audigy 2 nx (usb_audio) to work, but it's only in stereo, and the volume control is flakey. I want to upmix my 2.1 to 5.1. Yes I know it's not true surround... I've heard all the lectures. I can do it in windows and I believe windows uses the nx to process and enhance the sound. Can I do that in linux too? I know creative isn't the friendliest external sound card to use with linux... can anyone suggest a better one (only if it is easy to get to do this).

Also, I get skipping/lagging/studdering dvd playback (sound and a frame skips every minute or so). I believe dma is on. Whenever I try to use hdparm with my sony dvd drive it won't let me change any parameters. Is this a sony thing?

I'd prefer to use fedora (does pulse audio make this easier?)... but I used others with the same results... including gentoo. These are the only things keeping me from using linux full time.

Thanks for your help.
