what the duece is wrong with this laptop? My lcd will randonly go blank (black screen). Sometimes it will recover by moving the mousepad and sometimes I have to close and reopen the lid.

Is something loose? How come every AW i own always has to have some sort of issue?? WHen the screen goes blank you can still see the background faintly. The music is also running too if i'm listening to music.

Any ideas? thanks!

yes randomly goes blank during use.

That's definitely not right.... sounds like the LCD cable is loose connected to the motherboard.

Check your power settings, and make sure you don't have it set to shut off the screen after a minute or two idle... Only thing I can think of...

I have mine set to always on, and the screens never shut off, hd's never shut off while plugged in.

It could also be a backlilght switch issue. I had mine get stuck on my Area51m 5620D and it did a similar thing. You can see what is on the screen but it is extremely faint. To rule out a vid card issue, hook up an external monitor if you have access to one.

Luckily I didn't have to do too much to fix it, just sanded down the plastic piece that pressed the switch down. It was difficult for me to fiddle with the actual switch when it would get stuck so that was the best solution for me. Bought that lappy backin 2002 and it is still kickin'. I love AW.

I was just thinking that. You all always have some issues with whatever system you get.

As stated before, check your power settings, if they look cool, call tech support.

Good luck!

You just seem to have some bad luck with Alienware. LOL I hope it all works out!

There are no backlight on off switchs but you there is the dimmer Fn keys which are Fn + F7 - F8.

If you are a bit learly about calling tech support then go to the support forums on the alienware site and post a tech support question in the customer support section. I've done this a couple times and always got good results. However nothing can beat talking to someone one on one especially if they know what they are talking about which alienwares tech support is very good at.

Good luck

Update: I havent experienced any issues the last few times I used my m9750. I have not used it much lately but I set my Screen to "always on" with the AC plugged in and the screen goes to Screensaver mode during idle. Thanks for the help guys and your suggestion HH Happy near year all!

Hey Guys, the problem is back. I brought my lappy to work today to watch movies etc and all of a sudden the screen went blank. (U can still faintly see the desktop and the music etc is still playing)

This occured twice today. Once watching a movie and once just opening a program. I'll give AW a call and see what the duece is going on.

If you can still see a faint desktop, it's likely the backlight is going out. That could be the light itself, or the inverter for the lcd panel.

Call tech support, if they find it's the inverter they can send you the part.

HH,

AW support believe it's a video card issue. What do u guys think? The LCD is exactly how you describe it. When it goes blank, you can see a faint desktop background.

Could it be the lcd back light/lcd inverter? or some loose or windows Vista issue? Anyways, moving the mousepad does not help. (although now and then it will recover by touching the mousepad) The only way to bring the backlight back is to close and reopen the lid.

Anymore ideas? thanks!

if you're closing and opening the lid I'd say inverter. When you close it, the screen cuts power and opening it back up puts power back on. I doubt its the vid card.

well the screen just goes blank when your either watching a movie or opening an application. Touching the mousepad may or may not bring the backlight back. Only closing and reopening the lid brings the backlight back.

What do u guys think? video card or inverter? I know how to change and access the video card but where is the lcd inverter located and how can i remove the top chassis? I'm still waiting on AW support's response. Thanks
