m9750 screen suddenly goes blank?? - Page 2

Update: So I hooked up my m9750 on my sony bravia lcd and got the faint desktop reproduced today.

So the display on my laptop is faint now and the video is still showing on my Sony LCD. so the problem is definetly not the VIDEO CARD.

Does this sound like the LCD inverter? I need to know so I can have the right part sent to me. How do I get access to the LCD inverter? is it behind the front bezel?

Problem has not occured in awhile.

Its definately one of the two. Why don't you just call and let them help you figure it out? I'm not flaming, but why is it such a big deal to just call? You've spent what, a week posting here asking us what it is? If I was you I'd be on the phone with TS and they'll identify and send you the right part.

I did call today. The guy I'm talking to is not in today. I left him a message and hopefully he will get back to me tommorrow. I'm very busy during the week and don't have time to talk to AW tech support so it's easier for me to email TS and post here for help

i would say that its probably a lcd inverter issue... but it could also be a backlight issue...

Thanks for understanding I was trying to flame you.

Good luck with your issue; keep us posted.

AW support believe it's a video card issue. What do u guys think? The LCD is exactly how you describe it. When it goes blank, you can see a faint desktop background.

Could it be the lcd back light/lcd inverter? or some loose or windows Vista issue? Anyways, moving the mousepad does not help. (although now and then it will recover by touching the mousepad) The only way to bring the backlight back is to close and reopen the lid.

Anymore ideas? thanks!
If you can still see the desktop, it's not likely the vid card.

It could be the switch for the backlight. It could be getting stuck or hanging up a little so the laptop thinks the lid may have closed.

Have you checked your power management settings to make sure you don't have the screen set to shut off after a couple minutes of inactivity?

Sounds to me like the sensor switch that decides whether the lid is open or not...

Since the screen image isn't dropping out, I wouldn't think it was the inverter. Either the backlight is burning out, or the switch that shuts it off is problematic.

With the old 766, the switch was activated by a pin that stuck up and felt if the lid was open. It would get dusty sometimes, and not extend fully, so the laptop would think the lid was closed, and it would do what you're describing.

Problem is, I don't have any idea where the switch is on the m9700 or how it works...

As for the inverter, here's AW's knowledge base article on replacement.

Make sure wheh you talk to them, you let them know it works fine on external monitor, and when it shuts off you can still see the image on your lcd. I would think if the inverter was bad, you'd see no image. Same with the video card.

HH i was thinking the same thing regarding the pin getting dusty or not extended fully. But where is this located? I checked my old m9700 (sold to my friend) and my m9750 and I cannot locate it either

And yes, my power managment for my LCD is set to always on (never shut off). Like I said before, when the lcd goes blank/faint the laptop is not shut off... it's still on. But touching the mousepad the LCD will not turn on. The only way to bring the lcd backlight back is to close/reopen the lid.

*Also, i checked the LCD inverter cable and it's tight and secure so this is not the issue.

I'll keep u guys posted... thanks!

i work for a repair co. guys and trust me its the backlight, a few possible problems tho. Could be the PSU PCB, if something is gone on that it will "short out" but the display will still be there. Could be the light connection inside the laptop (within the flex). Could be the inverter itself... 9/10 we have to replace the invertors. Hope this helped and good luck

Sorry, haven't checked on this for a while...

It sounds like the inverter, or could be a sticky lid switch or the backlight, most likely the inverter.

Here is AW's knowledge base article on reseating the inverter cable. That might help you find the inverter. Reseat the cable and see if it fixes the issue.

If it crashes, it's not the same problem...

You may have a bad stick of memory, or a heat issue with the cpu or vid cards. Try to take the memory out, and reseat it and see if the issue goes away.

Here's AW's knowledge base article on reseating the memory in the m9750.
