Alienware Area-51® m9750 Graphics Upgrade Program!

Don't get excited. :/

Here's the post on the site:

"Upgrading to the latest technology has never been easier! Right now, Alienware is giving all current owners of the Area-51® m9750 notebook an exclusive opportunity to upgrade their graphics solution from the 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX to the powerful new 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8700M GT. Best of all, your upgrade to the GeForce 8700M GT comes AT COST. So forget about footing the bill on some inflated markup, and enjoy the lowest cost possible on the highest-performing mobile graphics instead.
Get with the Program
Here's how the graphics upgrade program works:

* If you have purchased an Area-51 m9750 notebook, you are eligible to upgrade the graphics on your system from the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX to the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT.
* You can choose to upgrade to a single or dual graphics card configuration, depending on your specific needs.
* After you ship your system to Alienware's facility, your upgrade will be completed in one short week.
* All previous data will remain on your system following the upgrade. Please note, however, that Alienware highly recommends you back up your data beforehand, on the off chance that a hard drive wipe is necessary.

A Direct Path to DirectX® 10
One of the biggest advantages of upgrading to the GeForce 8700M GT graphics card is DirectX 10. While the GeForce Go 7950 GTX limits you to DirectX 9, the DirectX 10-compliant GeForce 8700M GT ensures you can:

* Play the upcoming new wave of games that utilize next-generation DirectX 10 graphics technology.
* Experience incredibly enhanced detail in complex gaming environments.
* Enjoy visually arresting effects like dynamic lighting and weather.
* Immerse yourself in the most realistic gaming experience to date."

So one can upgrade for Cost, but only to 8700's at the moment. I was hoping it was for the 8800's. Maybe in the future.

I also saw this in an e-mail from Alienware. I called to see what the cost was, and it comes out to $690 for 2 cards in sli shipping included. The graffics do look nice on the dx 10 cards, but I may hold out for some of the better dx 10 cards

$690. Meh. Still expensive, but I'll wait for the 8800's.

I think that those are what i am waiting for too...my 7950 gtx's still look really good on every game

It would be funny if the screen shots included frame rates and DX9 screen shot with XP and 7950's was 90 FPS whereas the screen shot with Vista and 8700's was 20 FPS.

When I got the GPU upgrade email from Alienware this morning, I was expecting it to be about an upgrade to the 8800's. At least they didn't announce that the 8700 would be the only gpu upgrade for the M9750.

Does anyone know if these prices include the discount we're supposed to receive on upgrades if the system is still under warranty?

When I just called, the tech I spoke with said that Alienware is not offering a discount on these items! Wouldn't that be in violation of the warranty agreement?

It does include the discount. $690 for two 8700's makes them $345 each and that is $55 less than they charge for an additional 8700 with a new M9750. Just because they extend this offer to those without an extended warranty doesn't mean it isn't a discount. Besides that, all M9750s are still under the default one year warranty.

Any update on the prices?

you cant get 8800 cards for the m9750 they are too big and wont fit in the machine... so you will wait maybe forever for a 8800 card... the 8700 cards are slower than the 7950 cards so I will take a dx9 card that runs faster than a dx10 card that runs slower...
