Didn't you have an XPS before?

You would've gotten M1730 replacement if you had waited until your M1710 died eheh...

lol I did have it, but... My warranty has expired

I did sell my old one!

I would love to wait for 8800M GTX, but I am afraid it will take a while before Dell starts offering M1730 with 8800.

I need a computer now I can always upgrade the video cards later.

If it's just for school/work then buy the cheapest lappie (2nd hand) with built in wireless and this will do to cover the daily browsing, word/excel needs. Then when the 8800gtx comes out, dump the old and buy the new. Will save you $$$ as the upgrade from the 8700 will far outstrip the cost of a cheepie .

But you will also be without a good laptop to game in the mean time. Tech is constantly changing. I say go for it now. If the upgrade comes within your return period. Just return and rebuy.

I had a M1730 ordered . Order was made on 19th of Nov . After 10 days it was still in production , plus the estimated ship date was Dec 13th . . . I decided not to spend 3k$ on a system that doesnt 100% support 8800 video in it ( noone knows for sure if it does ) . I am without a PC for almost a month now , using my 3yr old inspiron 5160 with broken CD drive . I wish companies would hurry up with the 8800 systems already .

I had mine ordered on the 4th nov with EDD 14th,got postponed to the 28th, got postponed to the 13th of december...

Got delivered on monday the 3rd, it had defective screen and wobbly base... Engineer came onsite, replaced the screen for one that looks worse and said that there are only 2 solutions for the wobble, either replacement or put the computer appart change the base and put it back togheter....

I got called today with a confirmation that a new order has been placed... Expecting the new order number...

Mine came in last night, and there are probelms...

Power plug wobbles! If you touch it, the battery stops charging. Screen is samsunsg, with pretty bad light leakage.

Dell wanted me to send my system back, but I refused to do that. Tech is coming out on Tuesday! I am hoping for LG!!!

Very surprised that there are so many problems with this system.

Well... After having both the LG and the Samsung, I can say that eventhough the samsung is a bit darker and has a bit more of light leakage... It may be the case that the lg replacement I got is defective too, as it is also faulty, in my opinion the Samsung is totally worth it compared to the lg i got... I mean the colors are soooooooooooo fake, and when trying to watch hd, they look like sh*t and all pixelated, im using the same drivers same everything...

Im attaching a coupe of pics from yesterdays ep from las vegas...

Thanks a lot for your input. Only reason I wanted LG is because light leakage irritates me, and everyone was raving how good LGs are..

Now I am not that sure

Update...

Tech was here to replace the motherboard, and now M1730 won't power up at all. He called Dell, and they promised 3 business day system exchange (my system is under 21 days, so at least they pretend to care).

Today (3rd day), I called Dell tech support, and their techs sent me to Customer Care.

Customer care told me that I will receive a new laptop in 3 weeks. GRRRR!!!

I asked them why did Dell rep 3 days ago gave me 3 day turnaround time. Customer care rep replied that my system is old, and they are having a hard time finding a replacement????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I had to call tech support agian, and after hours of arguing, they are promising me to send a new system by next Wed (even though on their website it was postponed until the 24th)

I think that I will not send my old laptop back to Dell. i dont care if its working on it.

and there goes the "award-winning" XPS customer service down the crapper...

nobody's perfect.

you should here some Sager horror stories.

no on site service.

you must pay the most expensive UPS shipping there 150.00 bux usually. (ask anyone on the forum.notebookreview official re-seller forum).

and then they aren't responsible for scratched chassis or taking proper care of your system if there is dents when you get it back.
Can't beat a Dell on site or in home compleate care warranty. That is one of the reasons I have had all versions of the XPS Laptops except for the 1730 as my 1720 is still holding its own.

The "pixellation" and "fake coloring" are a fault of the video encoding of the file you're trying to watch. sure it was broadcast in HD originally, but then they made a small file so it's easy to send over peer to peer networks.

if you want to see how capable the system is of doing colors, run a game, or look at some of your pictures. don't use an encoded xvid with mpeg2 for god's sake to see how well a display works. if I take a picture of a turd of course it's going to look like sh*t! even if I put an "HD" watermark in the corner!

it just so happens that I've had both samsung and LG WUXGA's are both are excellent, with the one fault that the whites are a bit faded for both. but when I download an episode of heroes that's 300MB big it looks like crap too. then I download the 1GB 720p or 1.5GB 1080p h.264 or VC-1 versions and it looks badass.

Hi, the file im showing is 720p HD h264. Its not p2p bs and its 1.1GB... I also tried with heroes 720p and the same occurred.

Im not even playing xvid 350mb shows as they look like there are only 20 big ass pixels floating around.

It might be the case that my LG screen is also defective, like i said... Im expecting a full replacement. I will keep you informed.

That's odd for sure, but those artifacts are a classic signature of poor encoding. Perhaps you can try a different media player, such as VLC or the Zoom player that comes with the CCCP?
