ASUS set to release 8800GT with 1GB

If some images to recently surface on the big back Internet are to be believed, ASUS may soon launch an all-new GeForce 8800GT graphics card with a whooping 1GB of GDDR3 memory - this, of course, compared to the current 512MB model and the 256MB versions about to hit the market.

At least according to the source, clock speed would remain the same as the reference version at 600MHz core clock and 1800MHz DDR memory clock. There are also claims being thrown around which suggest it might be using a custom-made PCB.

As if the 8800GT couldn't get any hotter and any more press than it already has...

may be nice for extreme resolutions or games that have HUGE textures but I doubt the GT is fast enough to utilize that much memory anyways.

It's the answer to those high resolution arguments everyone was having.
no it isn't, many cards have been released in the past with x2 the memory and they usually don't gain any performance under normal gaming situations. The only situation I can think of.

1) Playing a game such as Oblivion with all the mods, = huge texture packs

If you are gaming at super high resolutions ie. anything over 16XX by 10XX then you should choose the GTX and probably OC it or the ULTRA.

Yes it is. Because the argument was, since it only 512mb of mem the thing wouldn't keep up with the Ultra or GTX. Now it has 1gb..

I wasn't referring to anything real, just the stupid arguments people were giving when the GT was about to hit.

That box is also fake..

Is the memory bus high enough though for this extra vram to make a difference is the question. Still waiting for the 9800 series myself

Wonder when they'll get the GDDR5 memory in production
post #9 of 21
Well that website predicts 2010 will be mainstream, which I think is a pretty accurate thing. I wonder if the 9 series will use GDDR4 in it I assume the (10 series?) will use GDDR5

Samples of Samsung's new GDDR5 chip have been delivered to major graphic processor companies and mass production is expected in the first half of 2008.
I still don't see them getting it into the 9 series unless they delay the project, I mean they'll have that stuff in testing for quite a while before they even can begin tests in a GPU itself which just makes me think they'll push it back for the next batch

you mean to run crysis on that high setting?
You would think this 'new' series of 8800 cards would offer SM4.1 with the impending release of dx10.1/vista sp1.
Well, they aren't going to do that since they'll probably wrap that up in the 9 series rather than put it on an old generation of cards
post #15 of 21
Can anyone find any of the new GT or GTS SSC versions in stock anywhere?

The 8800GT simply isn't powerful enough to run CRYSIS at highsetting and resolutions and Brilliant if you really think the 1GB will make the card any better in any significant way I suggest you go read up on how a GPU works........

alrighty, I guess I confused you? I was not talking about the cards performance. I was referring to the people...the people that would argue the gt wouldn't keep up with the gtx based on their mem size alone. I know all about gpu's and how they function the memory bus would be more important than the gpu though.

plus where have you been in my desktop section... you just pop in on this thread to bash the gt lol

The GT already plays Crysis on high @ 1680x1050 sooo I'm not sure where your argument is.

Big difference from that resolution to 1920x1200, I assure you it will drop frames dramatically, then add in AA/AF...Gt down for the count

Alright you all have been warned about this before. Play nice and do not go down that path again.
