area-51 m7700 raid troubles

Thread Starter
i am having some problems with the raid array on my m7700 1st build.
around the beginning of the summer i was experiencing issues with my laptop.Iit would crash saying an operating system was not present, upon further inspection i realzied that one of my hard drives had become disconnected from the array. i called tech support they did the usual rebuilt the array etc. same thing happened again tech support decided that one of my hard drives had crashed. no biggie good excuse for an upgrade, i went buy 2 seagate 120gb hard drives installed them everything went fine, found the raid drivers for vista installed everything it was great for about a week. same problem again sent it off this time to get fixed, returned within the first week same error call alienware, i decided that since the raid was crashing it had to be the motherboard as they said the controller was builtin to the motherboard so i said screw it decided to send it off for a new motherboard. get it back it was working fine then about two weeks later same problem.

does anyone know anything that would help me in this situation. also how would i go about seeing if the motherboard was indeed replaced? i have a suspicion that they may have no replaced it. any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Take out your ram sticks and you will find what revision motherboard you have. If it's a version 5.xx then it's the original. If it's a version 6.xx then it's a newer version. Since you have the 6800go 1st revision then they "probably" would have changed it to a version 6.xx with the replacement.

Then again, they may still have version 5.xx in stock for warranty replacements.........

Let us know what the outcome is..

Hi Flatulatta
I have a version 6.0 Mobo which has the same problem.
I repaired it for a while by re-soldering the Promise raid controller. But since then it is now giving the message that no drives are found and the No Operating System Found Message.
I am in the process of going through the Mobo components to discover the problem.
I am sorry that I am unable to give further help until I have found the problem.

well i just checked and it says v5.3, the problem with that is i specifically requested to have the most up to date board installed, that way when i got some more money i could upgrade the gfx card as well. as of right now its running fine been on for almost a whole day.

I had the same problem with my m7700. All I had to do was turn off the card reader in the BIOS.

I'm having the same problems with my m7700 computer. Just last week, it started giving me the dreaded "Operating System not Found" message, and one of my HD's was also offline. I rebuilt the array and continued to have problems. Sometimes, it detects nothing and I get OS not found, sometimes it hangs on the "Scanning IDE Drives" area, and sometimes it loads up.

Problem is, when it loads up, it randomly locks up. I did once get a BSoD that said something about a "Kernel error" but I didn't write it down (hard to write legibly when you're raging).

I have a bigger problem, though. I bought my laptop off of eBay, and Alienware won't offer me any support, even when I try to pay them. They told me they don't support their produt unless the owner is the original purchaser.

I tried disabling the card reader, with no luck. I'm thinking of switching from RAID to ATA mode. I also have the 5.3 board. If I can get the bloody thing working, or if anyone has any extra advice, please let me know.

Hi

The raid controller as far as I know is under the black heatsink as shown in picture one. Once removed the Raid Contoller can be seen. On the one I rebuilt I had to re-solder all the pins (Definatley not for the faint hearted). It worked for a while but then gave up again. It would appear that once these Mobo's start showing signs of distress, Its a good idea to buy a new one.

I bought what was thought to be a new one from Ztronics. Turned out that it had been repaired and it didn't work, nor did the replacement. Stuck without a laptop now.

I have 4 Mobo's and none of them work. Does anyone have one for sale that works ??

Regards

Tricky
